I seen one on e-bay... I'll pass word to santa for ya...no one'll know...hehe
Saw an early 90 chevy 1500 with a cummins 3.9L (130Hp) in it at the fuel card lock a little while ago. I knew right away before he pulled up that something was off by the sound of it. He claimed some wild MPG numbers (25+ MPG I think) and that the only thing he didn't quite like about the swap was that it was a bit "shaky" in his words. He was planning a long trip with it and was going to take the fan off to see if he could gain some more MPGs. He still had the original single stack aluminum rad for the factory V6 that the truck was built with, and claimed to have over cooling problems. He popped the hood and I saw it with my own eyes. Surprisingly small engine.
Yeah, I know its blasphemy (chevy/cummins in a ford forum) but it was still cool to see other guys doing diesel repowers and not just for making smoke and huge horse power.
You used to be able to get kits for Cummins motors in pick-ups. May still be able too. I have several Chevys have 6.2's pulled out a Cummins put in. I knew a guy real well that had a Cummins out of a yard dog in his truck. It was very tight. It was a jacket-water-aftercooled motor {JWAC}. Rated for like 250HP. It was heated up alittle. He had a 400 Turbo behind in it with an overdrive unit. He had it built a strong as it could be but trans didn't last very long in it. About once a every other it had to come out.
I'd play with all sorts of diesel powertrain options all year long if I was made of money (not on my F250 though). Haven't yet been able to make that EMD powertrain that I've been dreaming of, but maybe some day.
I like building up vehicles and modding, but I also like to do different kinds of modding than the usual big Hp builds, not that I mind having big Hp. I would go crazy without my turbo 6.9. I still get giddy when ever it starts up.
I saw a truck a while back that was about the neatest rig Ive ever seen. My elderly neighbor took me to his friends house and he was working on his truck (adjusting the timing) Well I stood there looking the truck over scratching my head till he finally shut it down. So I had to ask "is that a cummins your workin on?" He answered matter of factly "yeah its the industrial cummins" Im assuming the 5.9 they use in some heavy equipment right???
The reason I was a little bewildered, and I wish I had pictures:
1. It was 80/86 FORD cab
2. F150 badge on fender
3. Powered by Cummins badge on fender
4. Sleeper behind cab ( yeah thats right a 36"+/- sleeper)
5. Wrecker type bed with welder/torch setup
The guy told me it was all mounted on a motorhome chassi.
As far as I could tell as an ameture it was all done right too. It looked real good anyway.
Oh, got no idea what tranny. Didnt even ask
smokey98: There is an automotive and an industrial BT 5.9- I have no idea internally what the difference is.
I do know that the industrial 5.9 in my pickup does have some differences from the 5.9 in Dodge trucks. Exhaust manifold, turbo, intake crossover, starter, all different. Mine has a road draft tube just like the old big truck engines. Injector pump is a Bosch VE, used on the older Dodge's also.
Alternator, AC compressor are original from the 460 that was in the truck. Brackets made to mount them. Radiator is also original but the fan is large, more blades and made from some kind of nylon or plastic material. The fan is from cummins. Throttle cable and cruise cable are original, hooked up with another home made bracket.
I've been meaning to find out the internal differences but never think about it when I'm someplace I COULD find out. Brains are getting slow.
Christmas wish: A bigger old Ford to swap stuff into and add more stuff too.
MERRY CHRISTMAS from me to all......It was right for a long, long time and it's still right!
