I have a 01 f350 powerstroke with a 6 speed manual. I am running a edge with attitude chip. and I have found a problem with the truck when under load. the truck strugles to pull a trailer with a skid steer down the interstate at more than 60 mph. It seems as though the turbo is not building enough boost. the most it ever seems to get up to is 12 to 14 pounds of boost. I also have noticed a large amount of smoke after the truck is started. any ideas on what is going on here, it looks kinda bad when I get pasted by everyone else going down the road.
that's very low boost for having a chip. You should be in the low 20's at least. Check your up-pipes for leaks, also check all fittings on your intercooler pipe and turbo & make sure they are all tight. When was the last time you changed your air filter? Do you have an aftermarket intake? Intake and exhaust will open that thing up quite a bit.....
EDIT: also check the fuel filter.....truck will run like crap if it's really dirty
Sorry forgot to finish the air intake is a stock system and the fuel filter is changed every 6 to 10 thousand miles but the truck is worked hard all the time
I'm sure other guys will be along soon also to help out, but I'd check for exhaust leaks at all of your boots, and up-pipes. Also it couldn't hurt to pull your intake and inspect the condition of your turbo wheel. With the stock intake setup, it doesn't clamp down very well......and can allow dirt to pass straight into your turbo. If the wheel doesn't have any dings or chips in it, and doesn't have hardly any play when you wiggle it, then your turbo should be okay. You haven't mentioned any aftermarket intake. Any exhaust upgrade will breath a LOT better with an intake. A cheap, but very effective way to do this is the 6637 filter from fleetfilter. Do a search for 6637 on here and you'll find tons of info about it. Other setups can be sorta pricy.....from $250 and up.
Check your FUEL filter also, I noticed in your reply you said air and oil filters are changed. Good luck....and let us know what happens!
EDIT: I see your fuel filter has been changed. Definitely upgrade your intake soon though! You won't benefit much from that nice exhaust without it!
Welcome to FTE. What color is the large amount of smoke you're seeing? Sounds like you have a boost gauge. What other gauges do you have, and can you share any other numbers with us besides boost? What RPM's are you seeing these boost numbers at?
The large amounts of smoke is your standard blue blue/white. It seems to be pulling around 12 pounds of boost at about 2200 to 2500 rpms. it also seems as though the egt numbers are a bit high as it runs around 1250 to 1350 when it is pulling the boost numbers mentioned and when you get out of it the boost drops down to about 4 to 6 pounds and the egt will only drop to 1100 to 1200 I figured the exhaust would help with the temps but the truck slows down rapidly if you don,t keep the pedal mashed all the time. even on the flat
Be careful about holding EGT's above 1250. Have you noticed any oil consumption or any signs of oil in the bottom of the fuel filter bowl?
You might try unplugging your map sensor and see if that makes any difference. How long have you had the truck? A stick shift will slow down pretty quick when you let your foot off the go pedal (really helps the brakes last longer that way).
New to this truck I have only had it about a year but I have one just like it to the T but has close to 300 000 miles on it so its just a work truck now. this new one has about half the miles and less than half the power even with the chip. that why I am confused. I will try the map sensor in the morning and see what happens. as far as oil consumption I have notice any but I guess I will look into it further. If I dont keep my foot into hard that I would be lucky to go 45 mph down the interstate, so I need to find a way to solve this problem. any other ideas I can try other than to unplug the map sensor.
I am really hoping this isn't your problem, but it should be addressed. Time to check your engine for excessive blow-by. Here is a video of what is a good amount, if it is puffing a bunch more then this....not good.
Check for any loose clamps on the boots first and don't forget the two under the spider. Also check the boots themselves for holes or tears. Also check for leaking up-pipes at the collector behind the turbo. Here's a pic of my old up-pipes with leak on passenger side, all black with soot. That pipe was so loose that once I unbolted it from the exhaust manifold I was able to just pull it out. I pushed it back in just for the pic.
Thanks for the help guys I finnaly got back to the truck and found what seems to be a rather leaky up pipe. hopefuly that is all the problems for now but I will let you know if I find anything else
