I put in an Exide Orbital Starting battery, because I had one sitting. It's starting strong, but without the threaded post I haven't hooked up my winch yet. Years ago, I had heard that the side post usually had small conductors which burnt out if you tried to draw much from them. Is this still the case or just crap?
I have to change my wiring a bit to put my winch on the side post, it would take a lot of work to get it on the top.
It is not a good idea to use both sets of terminals at the same time. The side posts are capable of handling > 700 amps but for a short period of time, max 15sec. If you going to use it to power a winch it would be better to add a deep cycle battery wired to an isolator in order to keep it charged. If you want to stay with the Orbital design Exide does make a deep cycle version they will fill your needs. The Orbital only has 90min of rc and if you use the winch for an extended period it will drain the battery and you may not be able to start the truck. Hope this helps
My alt makes up pretty well, it can put out 230amps. I am using the obital battery right now because I had one on hand and I am in a jamb. I'd really like to find a starting/deep cycle with top and threaded post, but I've had my fill of optima blue tops.
So side post aren't a capable as top post? Hopefully my winch isn't pulling more 250-300amps under strain, and the way I have my isolator wired, it only has power with the key on. I am not too concerned about starting since the motor will be running anyway.
Do you have any size constraints? There are several options and sizes that you can go with if you have the room. Let me know maybe I can hook you up with something
I have the ESOF pump and some AC lines I would have to move if I go much larger than a 34/78 series battery. It's all doable, but my funding is non-existent right now.
