I am buying a Ford ext.Van 4x4 Quigley -2005 to 2008. Now that Gas eng. do not need to be repaired, like the old days were you need a valve job at 60,000 and head gast. They came a long way. I donot know if I should pay more for a Diesel. I willnot be towing. I live in Delaware were its ALL flat. Will be using it to go to Montauk, LI. Gas being less then Diesel. This is a hard call for me. Any info. Please get back to me.
Does any one have a Diesel, would like to know the GPM.
Up until 3 months ago I was a diehard V-10 gas owner in a F-250. I don't tow alot, the most is 4,500 lbs a couple a times a year. Anyway, after getting 7-8 miles to the gallon on a good day and when gas was up to $4.35 a gallon I had enough a got a 2005 F-350 with a 6.0 Powerstroke. I am getting 15-16 mpg in the city and eventhough I pay around .75 cents more for diesel over gas I will NEVER go back to a gas engine in a big truck again! Yes, gas engines have came a long way, my V-10 was smooth and quite. It would pass everything but a gas station. And a 5.4 is no better on gas either. It is not worth it.
Wow !!! That is great --13 + is higher than I thought. I am now looking at new Ford vans. I think I will buy new and have Quigley do the 4x4.
Can I ask you some ?. Using the van for going on the beach, what tonage should I look at ?? Do I send it out to have the inside done ?? I will be selling my Parker boat and will have About $50,000 to spend
[At the most ] New ? Used ??
I am taking this slow because I want to do it right.
Thank You
Mr. Lures
Given my bias towards diesel...You will love a diesel especially when in 4x4. Gobs of torque at near idle engine speeds, pull anything, pull anything out when they are stuck. My truck (1 ton dually) with a 7.3L diesel gets about 15 mpg and I live at 5000' and travel over many passes above 7000'. If I was going the diesel route I would get some serious sand tires for when I go to the beach. If you get the front end stuck with a diesel, you'll need a train to pull you out ...that block is serious heavy. Remember, you will never regret getting too much truck for the job, but you will regret everyday getting a truck that isn't enough to do the job.
I have both a gas and diesel F250's same trucks, I like to drive the diesel way more than the gas truck because of fuel econmy and of course all the noises it makes. The gas truck has freshly filled and serviced A/C and a nice working CD player. The diesel has no A/C it just doesn't work and the AM/FM radio likes to turn itself up or down depending on how it feels to bother me, like it's haunted. I'd much rather have the fuel economy than the comforts of ac and a nice radio.
Thank you guys.
I am getting a Diesel. I was reading up on Ford vs Chevy. I am a Ford man all the way, BUT--after reading about chevy Diesel and talking to someone that has a Chevy diesel. I canot find any thing bad about chevy. The gas miles is better also. I would still get a ford --they have a 10 lift vs GM only 9 in. Thats big when your going over rocks in Montauk.
Thanks again,
Mr. Lures
I am a Ford man too. I work at Detroit Diesel and we still get A-plan for Dodge Rams. The Cummins is a good engine, but I still spent my money on a used Ford!!!!!
I love my noisy diesel...oh yeah and I like being able to drive around in 5th gear at 30 mph
BTW my truck manages 13-15 mpg around town (though it doesn't seem to do much better on the highway)- If I could put 3.55 gears in this thing (I have them, sitting on a shelf) and get the cruise control fixed I would take it just about anywhere. AC works good too!

I would be very careful about doing this. You are at or getting close to lugging the motor. Very bad for the rod bearings, and you can break the crankshaft letting the engine lug.
Or rebuild at 25K when he blows the turbo from lack of heavy use.
True. I don't know about the 6.0, but I'm still running the original turbo and tranny that my rig came with and they're still going strong at 170K+ (knock on wood). I've also never added a chip or programmer either though.

I definitely agree with that for sure.
I have a 7.3, and on trails with alot of hills and rock climbs i just crawl up in 4low practicaly just idling...while a gas truck i would just be slamming the gas pedal everything 2 seconds.
Theres just so many reasons to get a diesel over a gasser.
