Draining Water from Filter

I've had my new F250 about 45 days now and have almost 2000 miles on it. So far, the light indicating the water needs to be drained from the fuel filter has not come on. Should I go ahead and do this given the time/mileage? I have crawled under the truck and found the valve with no problem. It looks easy to do, other than avoiding getting diesel all over you. It's much easier to drain the contaminants on my John Deere tractor!

Manual says should do once a month. I do it about that often. I agree much easier on tractor but then again fuel tank on our 4020 was above the engine.

Personally, I never touched mine and I have 29,000mi. on my truck. If the light doesn't come on, there's no water anyway. Had the scheduled fuel filter change @ 20,000mi. No problems.

I've gotten a couple of tablespoons of water out without the light being on.

If I don't get a light I do it at oil changes and have no problems.

I'm taking it in for an oil change in about 3 weeks. If I don't have a light by then, I'll do it at the oil change.

Where is the light?

Mine does not come on when I turn on the ignition, like all the other warning lights. The manual shows it being next to the odometer in the DIC.

Shouldn't it light up for a second or two when the ignition is turned on?

On page 9 of the diesel supplement it says:

"The WATER IN FUEL light will illuminate when the ignition is turned to start (as part of the light function check)..."

I should have suspected that the manual is wrong because the "light function check" works when you turn the ignition to ON not START.
