rearend help

sorry if this a repetitive question, but i was wondering if you guys could help me figure out what kind of diff i have, its a 79 f350 4x4. for some reason i have a gut feeling its a dana 70, with like 4:10 gears. am i correct? if not please enlighten me. also its leaking so im going to fix that tomorrow, how much fluid does a diff this size take? 3-4 quarts? 85w90? sorry this stuff is still kinda new to me, just trying to pick it up as i go along thanks for the help

First F350 with 4WD = 1979.

1979 F350's with 4WD use a Dana 60 front and rear.

All the other 1973/79 F350's use a Dana 70.

The Dana ID tag is bolted (2 bolts) to the left (front axle, on the right) of the inspection cover.

The steel tag is 2" x 1/2" and has a 7 digit Dana ID code on it similar to this: 603010-1.

Post what the codes are, they can be decoded.

NumberDummy - I have pasted my numbers below from a previous post, I posted them about 4 days ago and I have not got a reply, I am not complaining maybe my post was not clear. I did not start this thread but if there is someone directly I can contact I would appreciate it. The dana and most BOM lists only go back to 1979 that I can find. Thanks

Also the BOM can be found stamped on the axle, not on the housing but the long shaft side in about 1/4" stamping. If there is no metal tag.

Good evening - I have a 1976 F250 Crew Cab I broke a rear pinion and ring gear. The BOM on the rear is 603717-11 from the axel tag between bolts. The front BOM is 603765-2, both are dana 60s the front is stamped 60F the rear is not stamped. I do little towing and use it for mountain hunting. Since I have to replace both ring and pinion gear, I want to swap gears from 4.10 and to 3.73.
Thanks for the help...

unless it has been swapped out, you should have a dana 60 diff.

The axel is stamped with the DANA BOM number on the long side of the axel tube also.

These are from my 1976 crew for example. I did not start the thread but I would appreciate the decode assistance too.

Thanks for the help...

oh sweet, i was semi right, about the dana 70's for f350's just the 4x4 just had another 60 in the rear. i dont know about the strength of dana axles, i always thought the lower the number the stronger, im guessing this is not necessarily true. so how does it go, and where does the ford 9in come into play with strength. thanks so much guys, this forums is a big help so far.

9inch diffs are not in f250,or f350 trucks.they come in cars,f100,f150, broncos,e series vans etc. a ford 9 inch is a drop out 3rd member type diff. this means to remove the carrier from the axle housing, you remove it from the front of the axle with the pinion gear attached .the 9 inch is rebuilt, and gear preload, backlash, etc. are set up out of the vehicle on a work bench. that is part of the reason they are so popular in the racing community. you can build a few at a time, and when needed, just remove the old and replace a complete third member already set up on the bench. there is no set up required under the vehicle really. just bolt it in. a 9 inch doesn't have a rear cover to look at the inside of the diff, so you must remove the drive shaft, and axles too. to remove the axles you must first remove the wheels, brake drums, then release the axle retainers.then remove the unite from the front with the whole third member entacked.

For reference, the D60 is 9.75"...and it seems like a lot of Ford racers like the 9" over the D60 because there is more of an aftermarket for it, and it does have some other advantages with race applications (but you'd have to talk to monsterbaby about that).
gotcha, so i got a pretty strong set of axles huh? and i think i saw a dana 80 before too? i would assume that axle is the strongest. and thanks for the info on the ford 9in. i learn something new everyday you know.

Your 79 F350 has a very sought after and strong front dif. As far as the rear D60 I have recently learned is not that great. I also have a 79 F350 4x4 with 38 inch tires and just snapped a stock rear shaft. I put in a set of yukon chromoly shafts and I'll see how they hold up. Ive been advised to find a bigger axle with larger shafts to avoid breaking rear axles in the future so I am putting together a corporate 14 bolt now.

On the front diff they make a thick gear so you don't have to change out diffs on certain gearing for front diff. Call around like randy's ring and pinion or presicion gear. They probably have something to keep it simple. Stay away from shims under gears. I checked my spicer book and i came up with the same number that numberdummy has. Good to know my book is still good.
