Watershield?

I was reading in the service manual about installing a new exterior mirror. It says "remove front door trim panel and front door watershield refer to section 501-05" That section clearly shows how to remove the door panel but does not even mention the watershield. What exactly is the watershield and how do you remove it?

On my Caddie the watershield is just unside/under the door trim panel. It covers the entire inside surface of the door and sits against the metal surface and covers the openings to get inside the door. It should be held on by some clips. I think its something like a heavy waxed paper or something like that. You should be looking at it after you get the trim panel off.

Plastic sheeting similar to visqueen used in construction for vapor barrier under concrete. Held in place by a tar-like caulking.

You shouldn't need to remove the door panel to install new mirrors. The sail panel (the black plastic cover at the front part of the door) need to be removed (by pulling) to access the bolts that hold on the old mirror.

The door lock & window control needs to be removed (push forward and lift the rear to remove) to access the electrical connection for the mirror.

I had to remove it to access the wire connector which on my truck was located behind the speaker. It was pretty easy following the instructions from the service manual. My only advice is if you don't have any help make sure the window is down so when you install the new mirror you can hold it up with one hand and reach through to screw the nuts on with the other.
