So I have a '76 302 in a '84 full size Bronco that originally had the 300 in her. I'm using the same alternater that has the dual belt pulley on it and I keep throwing belts like mad! Now ever though belts are only $5 or so it adds up fast each time I go in to get a new belt.
The pulleys on the crank and the alternater are lined up just about right, but off just a touch. And the belt sits down in the valley like it should.
My friend told me that I need to shim the alternater to remedy that problem.
Now I'm wondering how do I go about shimming the alternater? Do I put shims on the top bolt between the head and the alternater? Or so I shim the bottom bracket?
I know this may seam like a dumb question but I’m tired of losing belts and forking out the money for them. I just want to be able to get it right the first time and not have to worrie about it anymore.
Thank you.
Either or both. Whatever it takes to align the pulley's. Also should'nt have any give in brackets allowing alt. to shift under load. Also, belt should be going around crank, waterpump and alt. pulley's. I have seen some people try to run with belt on only 2 pulley's. Won't work.
Okay. But the thing is though is that my alt, H2O pump, and crank don't all lign up. The crank, H2O pump, and power stearing line up. and then the outter most belt pulley on the crank and the pulley on the alt ligns up....okay not quite, but by eye it looks ligned up but its not quite. Its off by just a hair.
The alt that came with my 302 looked identical to my 300 alt so I didn't bother swaping them out. Course the 302 alt didn't work at all.
I hae a duble pulley on my alt, a single pulley on my PS and water pump, and a triple pulley on my crank. But the problem with that is the the back pulley on the crank I can't use it becaues it dosn't lign up with anything. So I only have the middle and the most front pulley on the crank to use. the midde one is on the water pump and PS. and the outter most one is turning the alt.
I would go to the junkyard and get the correct setup for you engine. I bet some of the brackets were "modified" to fit from the six, and they are not right, and never will be right. No shims should be needed. And all the pulleys will be used, and everything will be turning the correct speed(notice how some of then crank grooves are different diameter?).
I found a picture, and on this particular model(I remember my 1980 rear groove was the power steering pump) they have the power steering(mounted on the driver's side) on the rear groove, the air conditioner compressor(mounted on the driver's side) on the center groove, and the alternator(mounted on the pass side down low) on the groove closest to the radiator. The correct alternator bracket will be a large ugly thing, since it also mounts the air pump on top of the alternator, and a short belt goes from the extra groove on the alternator up to the smog pump.
