hey, im lookin at buyin a real nice 74 f250 with a 460 and have a few questions. These trucks didnt come with the 460 from the factory right? the 460 is on propane and have never had a propane truck so im not to familier with them. do they get better or worse gas millage? can u run them with regular gas? does performance go down with propane? did these trucks have power steering? and did these trucks have shoulder seat belts or just lap belts? thanks.
b-man i ran propane i a 79 sc/460 pulling my camper/boat and got about 10 mpg emty or loaded find out if its straight propane or "duel fuel" [gas/propane]
mine was straight propane and thats a better way to go as long as you have access to fuel you do lose power as if you took 1 lb of propane and 1 lb of gas you get more power/btus from gas but that can be regained by raising compression as propane has an octane rating of about 105 i ran 11.1 pistons in mine no problem the other good thing is the motor with last forever as long as heads were built for propane as it is a clean fuel [10.000km oil changes] if its duel fuel it is a compromise between the 2
here is the differnce
gas need heat to convert liquid to droplets through carb into intake
prop already a vapor need to reduce heat eg 160 therostate/blocked heat risor passages on intake
gas runs normaly on 2 bbl
propane runs better/smoother on all 4 bbls this is done using a bolt/nut on the linkage [it will probebly be a model imco 425 with a holly base plate]
gas milage did not change at all running this way
gas being a wet liquid leaves residue in oil/crank case due to blowby
propane being a dry fuel is clean eg no carbon at all in motor
gas you need choke/richer to start cold
propane runs good at startup need to use a chev fast idle selonoid for air cond to idle up
gas carbs very complex to rebuild
propane can rebuild carb ect on the side of the road with a screw driver if you have the kits very simple
sorry to ramble on it just letting you know it is a good system as i had mine for 15 years with no problems, ran with the big boys, and the moter was as clean as the day i built it when i finaly rebuilt it after 300.000 km hope this helps regurds joe

460: 1973/79 F100/350 2WD only / 1983/96 F250/350.
This is a F250 4WD "HIGH BOY." Two things are in-correct.
No 4WD's came with 460's till 1983, and no Camper Special was offered with 4WD.
1974 4WD engine choices: 240 or 300 I-6 / 360 2V.
Power assist steering was available beginning in 1973 on F250 4WD's as an option, used thru midyear 1977.
High Boys use a separate control valve and ram cylinder, it's not the integral P/S used on 2WD's. Replacement parts for this type of P/S can be difficult to find.
Lap seat belts were standard equipment from 1967, shoulder belts were first offered as an option in 1968, became standard equipment in 1977 (exc. Crew Cabs).
This seems to be too much money for this rig.
The engine has been swapped.
A C6 may have come with this truck, but a 460 uses a different C6 than a 240/300 or 360 does. So it might have come with a manual trans originally.
What is the quality of the workmanship of all the modifications?
The seat isn't original, neither is the steering wheel.
It's been converted to run on propane, which may provide better mileage, but can be a PITA to deal with.
I don't know if m78 bought that truck new or not. he had a thread several weeks ago asking what the difference between a SCS and a CS is, and he was wondering if his was a SCS since it's a Supercab.
I don't Know if They ever made these, but in the Ford brochure "1978 Ford 4-Wheelers" printed 8/77 FTD-7813 on page 3 at the top center picture it says,
Camper Special
Ford F-250 4x4's are now available with Camper Special Packages. Both Regular Cabs and Super Cabs can be equipped to accommodate up to 11-ft slide -in or chassis-mounted campers.
