Front-end Noise

I have a popping or clunking sound comming from my drivers side front tire. It isnt noticeable when I first start driving. After I have been driving for a few min. it will start popping to where I can feel it below my feet. It does it every revolution of the tire. I pulled the hubs out and it still does it. Any thoughts? Ball joints where replaced last Dec. I thought maybe the needle bearings or wheel bearings. Anyone have any tests?

Does it get quicker as you pick up speed? Basically, are you 100% sure it's a rotational noise? Could very well be wheel bearings if that's the case. I'm not sure you can check them, short of pulling the knuckle off.

If you feel it at your feet, I would check the swaybar end links also. Look at the bushings and see if they are wore out. You should be able to see if they are wore.

Can I just replace the bearings or do I have to get the whole new assembly?

The whole assembly. Be prepared to fork over about $400 and make sure the threads on the studs match yours. Mine didn't and I ended up paying another $32 to replace the studs intstead of taking everything apart again. A 13/16 socket will take almost the whole thing out too.

I went with napa because they were the only ones that had it in stock. AZ had to special order it. Napa lists a bunch of different ones though and I took my broken one in with me to make sure I got the same thing (missed the threads on the studs though). Here's the link to one of Guzzles writeup that I used for pulling it apart. Welcome to guzzle's 4x4 Needle Bearing Maintenance Web Page From what I've read, all of the units have the same Timekin bearings in them, but come in a box with whoevers logo on them.

I got mine from Advance Auto...no problems in over 4 years! It was a lil over 250 IIRC. But I only have rear ABS. 4 wheel ABS is almost 100 more I believe!

Did he do anything to diagnose your truck?

all pepboys had was one for a 4wheel ABS truck. Mines only 2 wheel ABS. I think I could prolly cut the ABS wire off of it and use that one. Am I right?

I had it up on the jack. He grabbed it at the top and bottom of the wheel and picked up on it. Tire moved up and down a bunch. Said his truck was doing the samething only way worse.
