My truck has been a POS dog since I first got it. So I just got some money and put new injectors and return lines in my truck. I also advanced the timing maybe 1/32-1/16 of an inch. Not much, but enough that I thought it would make a difference. When I got it all done today, there was absolutely no difference than before. Except for maybe more smoke. I just can't figure out what is wrong. It has no power and pours out grayish smoke all of the time. I am thinking about playing with the injection screw because I know the p/o adjusted it, but I dont know what he did. Anybody have any ideas?
i assume it has no turbo you could play with the fuel screw but not before you install a pyrometer! straight pipe the exhaust and get some more airflow coming in like a ram air set up.there are lots of guys on her that did some things to their non turbo.best thing yopu could do is add a turbo.maybe propane injection if you wanna go through that.there may be a couple guys on here running lp.i would talk to a few of these guys.ya might try running a search for 6.9 performance to get a few ideas.i know others will chime in on this
I'm not expecting huge amounts of power. Not turbo-like power anyways. And I already have a homemade CAI and straight pipe. It just feels like the truck is not reaching its potential. It has trouble pulling itself up small hills.
Ya I just replaced the fuel and air filters. Its really weird because it is smoking a lot, so I think it is getting enough fuel, but it just has no power whatsoever.
the timing maybe to far advanced or your ip is on its way out do you run any fuel additive?if not try dumping a bottle of diesel kleen in it bein your in indiana i would get the white jug with the anti gel in it.its about $8 if it helps its worth it i run every tank ful with diesel kleen and run 1 or 2 quarts of lucas in my oil every time i change it and i have noticed a difference since i started doing that.lucas also makes a fuel treatment that i have had good luck with as well
Ya I use DieselKleen and I think that helps, I like it. I thought about the ip, but it doesnt seem to be missing out anywhere, and I thought that was a sig of the IP being bad
i have a turbo inject pump on my truck came like that it poors black smoke if urs is gray u might have poor copresion due to bad piston ring how many miles on the truck anthore thing u might have to break in the injector and ip
It may be that I have to break it in. I hope thats it. The p/o rebuilt the engine, but kept the same pistons and just put new rings and gaskets. But he told me that it really needed new pistons too.
When I first got my engine it was soo loud and just belched out white smoke. Turned the injection pump almost 1/4". That seems soo far but white smoke went away pretty fast and I get the powerstroke rattle when its cold. And the engine runs like a champ now. The first 1/8" or so in moving it didnt seem to do anything and then it got real sensitive to small moves.
To advance the timing turn the pump towards the passenger side. They say you shouldnt do it while its running but thats how I moved it the last 1/16th of an inch or so. You will know when you go too far because it starts to struggle to idle...then i just backed it off enough until it had a smooth idle and I think thats where I left it...just happen to get lucky and get the timing pretty much right where its suppose to be.
Does it have trouble even staying at high idle in colder weather? When I first got my engine running it wouldnt even run at high idle until the engine got warmed up...that was before I advanced the timing and it smoked like crazy.
