I have an 03 Explorer. It has developed a high pitch wine and thumping when I back off the throttle. I have replaced the transfer case, both front hub and bearings, both front CV joints, and the front drive shaft. When I come to a stop and start up again, the noise stops. Back off the throttle and it starts again. Help please.
I would also say it very well could be that T/C clutch pak doing it's funky thing,,,just for Ha Ha's,,put it in 4x4 High,,see if it does it then. If it does
stop,,,it is that T/C clutch pak.
I just did a tranny service on my 04' Explorer,,when on the lift and running after the trans fluid change,,the Auto 4x4 was kicking in all 4-wheels spinning,,,there was a weird resonance and clunking in the driveline,,my son in the Explorer on the lift,,I had him hit 4x4 High so it was locked into 4x4,,all the noise and clunking was gone,,Immediately !! He then clicks it back to Auto 4x4,,noise and clunking come back,,,the sensors between the front and rear shafts are making that clutch pac click in and out.
Also make sure your front and rear tires are the same pressure and size,,that will really screw it up..I read where as little as 0.006 in tire wear will aggrevate this type TOD(torque on demand) transfer case.
really, i have never heard that about that little tire wear doing that. when i first bought my X, the back had great tread, and the fronts were almost bald. the 4x4 dash lights were blinking and the switch had been unhooked. after reading this thread i can understand that they didnt want to screw anything up. i was pissed b/c i took it to ford and had to pay like $100 for them to fix it, when i coulda done it in like 2 minutes.
I measured the tires and found a HUGE difference. About an 1 1/2 inch difference. I went back to the place where I bought them and got a new set, both fronts and rears, and the noise is GONE. Come to find out the rear tires were mismarked. If you hear this noise measure all of the tires!!!!!!!!!!!!!
