ranger running lean

I have a200 ford ranger with 258000 miles. I have owned it from 14000 miles. It has the old style 4.0 pushrod motor. The check engine light is on and when I had codes pulled at parts store it came back banks one and two lean. it idles rough. I replaced the fuel filter and cleared the codes but it came back on a few days later.

Check the EGR valve for operation, and related sensors, if so equipped..

Take a look at the upper and lower intake manifold gaskets. They were prone to leaking as the 'rubber' was just a smidge too small in diameter to get a good seal, when cold, at least.
To test the EGR, you would apply vacuum to open the valve at idle. If the idle went bad, (or worse..) then the EGR is effectively closed at idle, and responding to vacuum. Which is how it should be. If the idle doesn't change when you open the EGR with vacuum, either the EGR was not closing all the way, or the tube from the exhaust manifold is plugged. Not closing would lead to cruddy idle, and a plugged tube would block the EGR flow, thus indicating that the EGR is not the problem.
I worked on an A* that had the 4.0, and the tubes attached to the vacuum fitting on the side of the intake would pop off now and again. Normally caused by a backfire when starting the engine. The tubes were HARD to get to in that beast. When it happened, the engine ran like c__p.
