where dose it go

Ok so i am new to the diesel thing i have owned my 2001 f250 since aug it appears to be pretty much stock but when i got the truck the coolant level was about half way full but like a week later it was empty so i went and got some coolant and fill it up and then like a week later it would be empty again the truck runs great and has lots of power but i have filled this thing up like with six gallons of the 50/50 mix and it still wants more there are no leaks do these trucks just use it or should i be looking for some thing thanks for the help

First off: Welcome to FTE...

Secondly: It should not be using that amount of coolant... If its not leaking externally then you need to look internally... (headgasket, cracked head) or something els...

How does your oil look?

How many miles do you have on her?

Ouch. That doesn't sound good. Definitely check your oil -- if it looks like chocolate milk, you got troubles...

I'll bet it is the bottom flange of the water pump.
The o-ring seal tends to work ok when the engine is warmed up, but when the truck cools down at night it will drop a small amount of fluid.

I hope you're right, Dan. Seems like a lot of coolant loss for him not seeing any leaks at all.

Check really well around the water pump and that flange Dan mentioned. Look for traces of dried coolant running down the hose and getting pushed up against the block by the fan. Put a pan under there to see if you can catch any coolant, especially if you don't park on a hard surface.

I hope he is using the correct coolant as well, and not the prestone 50/50 mix.

I would think the waterpump is weeping as Dan suggested, or you have a small crack in the degas bottle that is leaking coolant when the system is pressurized.

my next question after whats already been mentioned...... don't laugh, this is a true story..... an instructor at a college auto shop program always told students, I quote " taste the exhaust"....put your had over the exhaust.... get some condensate out of it where it hits your hand.... if it tastes like antifreeze you have a head gasket issue, cracked head.... some way for coolant to get into the combustion chamber and be pumped out.
