I had the Hypertech in my '03 F150 5.4. It was easy to use and was very useful for getting more low-end performance and torque when towing. The combination of the Hypertech and the K&N cold air intake made me feel like I was driving a sport truck when I really got on it.

The Superchip Flashpaq also does a nice job, but I just went through a very painful customer service experience with them on behalf of a customer.

Hi Joel_P_Jr
We can help you out; Look into SCT X3's very dependable and flexible.

To start with I drive a 2003 F250 5.4 auto. A buddy of mine priced his older Superchips programmer today for $!50. I've read the the Diablo or a custom tune is the best way to go but I was wandering if this would be a good deal or should I just save my money for something better? I've heard horror stories about people leaning out engines with generic programmers and I'd like to avoid this as I've already got a high mileage engine on my hands. A little background is I'd like to add a cool air intake (aFe most likely) and a aftermarket muffler with the possibility of a high flow cat. Really would like a better flowing y pipe at some point as well. I tow nothing heavier than a large ATV or lawn equipment. This is a daily driver and I'm looking for a little more mileage.

jdboy,

We get calls every day from customers who have the Edge Evo and a CAI, and the simple fact is that they don't play nicely together. Generally, if you're looking at a CAI, you're looking at custom tunes. I've heard good things about Justin at VMP Tuning and the SCT X3.

We sell the Gryphon, which is a custom tuned Evolution, and if you like all the gauges, that might be something to look into.

Thanks for the reply! I was beginning to wander if anyone would give me a straight answer. I'm looking at the CAI because I've freed up the exhaust and would like to open up the intake too. Just seems like this would equal things out more. I just installed my off-road test pipe and a 3" Deltaflow Flowmaster muffler yesterday and the y-pipe modifications will be next. I'll have to say the Flowmaster is a bit to droney inside the cab so I'll have to look for a good quality resonator to help with that. I'll have a look at the tuners you suggested as that will be the final step in this process.

I have an SCT Xcal2 for my 04' 6.8l. Origionally I got the SCT SF which is an XCal 2 with with canned tunes for multiple vehicles. I later converted the SF to an XCal2 using the free software on SCTs site so I could get some custom tunes to go with the mods I did. I got the tunes from Mike at 5star which I highly recommend. I also have experience with Diablosport tuners and I rank them up there with SCT. I prefer SCT over Diablosport because I feel SCTs canned tunes are better. I experienced a lot of pinging with Diablosports 87 perf tune so timing had to be taken out. I would look at the SCT XCal 3 for the F-150s and F-250s regardless of engine. If you want a display with all the bells and whistles look at the the SCT Livewire. SCT specializes in Fords but recently started offering products for GM and Chrysler.

From what I've seen they don't offer a SCT tuner for the 03' F250 with a 5.4L. Their website only lists a tuner for the 04' and up 3v engines. It looks at if I'll be looking into the Gryphon or something that can be custom tuned for my exhaust mods. I think I've ruled out the CAI because of various reasons.

Hi jdboy
We do offer tuning for the 03 F250. Thats not a problem at all. Sorry its not listed on our site maybe we need to chage that.. Call me if you want to talk specifics. But we can custom tune any Ford Vehicle....Rangers, F150, F250, F350, Stangs, Vans, Edges, Fusions, Ect.....Basically if its Ford its tuned.

Also, Nothing wrong with Gryphon either Bill will take care of you.
