Hey all,
I have a '99 Powerstroke that doesn't like to start when cold. I've replaced the glow plugs and relay...still no luck. If I plug in for an hour it starts. My Chilton says that the PCM gets an input from the Oil temp sensor, could this be the problem?
The only code it's throwing is P603 on a Superchips tuner.
Yeah, I'm new to the site...didn't know about all the different forums.
What makes you say battery issues? But I also have door lock problems. Are they tied together you think?
the door lock problems and batteries can be tied together, mine were but not always true
batteries have to maintain 10.5 volts while starting
when you plug it in the engine wil start easier taking less out of the batteries
so basically a battery and alternater check is about first to do
Does it mean that there's not enough juice to power the GP's? But still turn over the engine? I know I have a weak battery, but since the gp's engage first I hadn't thought that was the problem.
I really don't trust autozone to check the batteries...can I check them myself with a multi-meter at start-up?
yes you can check them somewhat, put volt meter on right battery and have someone try to start it.Voltage while starting has to be at least 10.5 or it won't fire the injectors
the glow plugs stay on about 2 minutes even though light goes out earlier
LOL! My 03 doesn't like to start in the cold unless its plugged in.
Keep a couple of things in mind....number 1 you're already concerned about your batteries...number 2 when the temps drop your oil gets thick which puts an extra strain on your starter, your batteries, your whole motor! Plug it in!
I plug mine in when I walk my dogs for the last time before we call it a night and unplug it before I fire it up in the morning.
