It was brought to my attention yesterday during an oil change that my 07 has a leak around the rear differential. It looks like it is happening in the front where the drive shaft attaches. The truck has 53,000 miles on it as I travel for business in it most of the time. I'll have to take it to the dealership next week, but shouldn't this be covered with Ford's standard 5year/60000 mile powertrain warranty?
I would think it would be covered under such a warranty, but I don't remember such an extended warranty being included with my '07 - I was thinking I have 3/36. I guess I'll have to look through my documents and see. A possible cause is a crimped or obstructed vent hose, not allowing pressure to vent as the rear heats up. It's not very likely this is the reason, but it's possible. If make-up oil is required, use only full-synthetic gear lube. Now, is this 'leak' merely a dampness with fuzzy dirt around the pinion seal area, or does it actually result in oil dripping off the housing? Just to give you a heads up, they probably will not do anything about oil 'oozing' out. If the housing is wet and dripping, that would be a legitimate leak. Don't clean it before they see it, but if they refuse warranty work you might use a degreaser and wash it off just to see how long it takes to see the oil again so you can estimate the severity of the leak. If you decide to pull the fill plug, wash around it first to avoid the possibility of grit getting in. You could check the oil level in it and then again in thirty days if it really has a wet leak. Most of the time the 'oozing' does not require adding oil. Also, you might pull the plug to check for over-filling. Check it cold with the truck level.
Dropped the truck off at the Ford dealership. They said it is leaking from the pinion seal, but they are saying my 2007 Ford does not have a 5 year/60K mile warranty. Saying the repair with fluid flush will be around $380.00. I am taking paperwork over to them to show this is incorrect, but it is stuff I am printing off of Ford's website. Does anyone know if the Pinion Seal is a warrantible (sp) item if I can get them to understand that my truck does have the powertrain warranty?
I believe my 07 F150 with 27,000 miles is leaking as well. the lower portion of my pumpkin has been wet, just haven't had time to crawl underneathe yet to see where it is leaking.
Just to mention, I have had this bring this truck many times with little things like this. Starting to get annoying. I love my truck, but I have had to bring it in several times for body stuff (fading, flaking, techs breaking stuff when fixing other stuff, etc), I think my Oxygen sensors are going (WB jumping around closed loop, dead on at open loop), differential now leaking, the list just keeps getting bigger and bigger. Nothing major, but none the less getting annoying.

If it isn't under warranty, I would just do it yourself. If it just presses is like they always have it is easy and can be done in minutes. The only down fall, if you choose to drain the fluid, is replacing it all. I changed one on my mustang and it literally took 10 minutes once the drive shaft was dropped.
FYI, if you can, do NOT take the drive shaft out of the transmission, otherwise fluid will leak out, just leave it in there.
