Just started missing at cold start up, blue smoke, eye burning smell, runs great after it warms up! Do I have a glow plug that went bad? Changed the GPR about 1 1/2 years ago, also new batts. Also I'm leaving friday to go hunting camp, don't have time to change glow plugs at this time if that is the problem! My ? is, will this hurt anything engine wise! I can plug it in at camp also...
Glowplugs only affect starting, not running. They only stay on for 3 minutes or less. Shouldn't hurt the engine if you can get it started. If you have means to plug the heater up at night, starting will be much easier and less smoke.
I had the same problem with the missing. I did change glow plugs and the GPR (Stancore) and it did not help the miss like ZX250 said. What the real problem was I hate to tell you was the Injectors I had 2 that was weak at start up and 1 was still weak after it was warm I would suggest you check them. I went with a set of Swamps Single Shots and that fixed the missing and hard starting.I would plug it up and check it out when you get back.
It starts no problem, just sounds like a cyl. is not firering right for a min. or two, smells like unburned fuel, than runs great! Once warmed up starts no problem! Just wanted to make sure this won't hurt anything untill I get back from camp! I geuss I got to find someone that has an AE to check this out! Hope its not an injector!!!!!!
Probably a dead glow plug. One cold cylinder will make a lot of smoke. A bad injector would probably be bad when warm as well. When you get back, you can do some more diagnostics, but I think you're good for the weekend.
It's possible you've got a sticking poppet (inside the injector) with the cold oil, that frees up as the oil gets warm. If the eye burning smell out the exhaust is fuel related, then you'll want to address this before the injector dumps too much fuel in the cylinder and you end up with that puffing.
So where do I go from here? Should I add more DK to the fuel? Is there something I can try to free it up, I got alittle over 3500 miles on my oil change, oil looks clean yet! We are loading the truck up tonight, and leaving around 4:00 friday morning! Got me worryied now!
We're all just throwing possibilities out there. An injector buzz test would tell you if there's got a sticking poppet. Glow plugs are still a possibility. You might try ohming the glow plugs to see if any, or how many are bad.
I don't think diesel kleen would help if that's the case. The only fix would be a new injector, but again, this is just a possibility I'm throwing out there. Doesn't mean this is the problem you have.
I'm going to check for any codes now! I haven't tryied starting it this morning yet! Also I'll try returning it to stock, I had it in safe tow for years.
If is a glowplug, the plugging up the heater should help with the cold fuel dumping. Cold fuel in a cold cylinder just don't burn good. Stock tune should help some as less fuel will be going in. Good luck on your trip and if you come up with any codes let us know. If you have a SuperChip programmer, codes are easy to get.
Checked codes only one P0475, and returned it to stock! Started no problem, no smoke, normal diesel smell. Around 30 outside didn't have it pluged in! Could it be just a one time thing as far as a sticking injector? Maybe I'll leave it in stock for the trip, going to suxk though!
