just clicked off 31k on my truck....had the dealer do an oil change last week when it was just over 30k. they recommended a fuel filter change which is fine but they wanted $170?!?!?! and also trans service which was outrageous like $500. I do ALOT of stuff myself on my Cobra and GSXR. I dont have a way to catch 15qts of oil otherwise I would do the oil changes myself thats why I hit up the dealer and its not that much more than it would cost me.
anyways...can I do the fuel filter(s)? a quick search showed my that AFE makes a set...part #AFE-44-FF006. good or just get Ford stuff?
and what about the trans? I know how to do a pan drop and filter change.
are these 2 recommended every 30k?
I don't know about the diesels, but the trans should be good for another 15-30k miles. There is no harm in servicing it now though. It really depends on how you drive and other conditions.
You should still have a cooler line you can pull and let the trans pump the fluid into 5 gallon buckets. If you want to go through the hassle of diy trans flush. The pan shouldn't hold more than a 8-10 qts. While you have it off, it would be a good time to install a modified valve body and a pan with a drain (perhaps even a little extra capacity.) B&M makes some nice and fairly affordable trans pans, with higher capacity and magnetic drain pan, if your interested.
I think your coming close to Diff oil change too. Not so much the front as the rear.
Your first fluid change for the 5R110W trans should be at 30k per the owners manual. It's best to have it done by a dealer, as it requires a machine that can heat the fluid. Having said that, $500 is way out of line for that service. I've seen many people in here (myself included) get the fluid change done by a dealer for well under $200. You might try another dealer and see what kind of a price you can get from them.

$500.00 for trans fluid change! A couple of months ago, I just paid my dealer about$140.00 out the door for the same thing. That dealer apparently doesnt want your business...
As far as the fuel filters go, they should be changed every 15K (very important). It is best to stick with Motorcraft (which are Racor) or if you have a International dealer near by, you can get the Racor filters there in a plain white box using part number 1847170C93.
Many here buy their filters from Diesel Filters Online. They have fuel filters at comparable prices to the International dealer which is cheaper then Motorcraft at a local parts store or the dealer. Here is a link to what you would want...
Here is a how-to on changing the fuel filters written by DCSpecial. Unfortunately the pictures that went with it are missing, but it is still a good write up anyway...
If you decide to change the trans fluid yourself remember to get the FT-145 external filter. It's in an aluminum canister underneath the right front side of the truck and will sometimes require an impact wrench to get loose without tweaking the mounting bracket. I change the FT-145 on mine at 10K intervals since I tow with some frequency.
The internal trans filter is really a very fine screen and is usually not replaced until 60K.
I would not let the fuel filters go past 15K. Changing them on the side of the road would be unpleasant.

Not sure where you are buying your trans filters from, but you may be interested in these.

I agree with the trans pan, more capacity will only help. But no on the valve body, you won't find one on the torqueshift, it's all solenoids for shifting, controlled by the TCM.
BTW if you can wrench at all you can change oil on your truck, stop giving money to the dealership !

the time it would take me to do it...after i find a way to hold 15qts of oil..its easier to pay an extra $20 and have it done in 30 minutes. plus its no fun when there is 2 feet of snow on the ground

Looks like either the software or the staff filtered the site where I have those filter change pics hosted.
If I quote myself there I can see the url got changed, which is why nothing shows up.
Same as FT-145 (NTZ is OEM) except they also come with the o-ring and at a cheaper price...
I buy from Diesel Filters online! Usually put together an order of a few fuel filters, FT-145's, and Mercon SP. Enough stuff to get free shipping and there's no sales tax.
