Using a vacuum extractor helps get the oil out in a controlled way. You go in thru the trans dip stick tube and suck out a good portion of oil. That way its less of a mess when you remove the pan. I used this method on the old ladies durango and was able to drop the pan very cleanly.
I paid about $70 for mine but, I'm in canada where everything cost you your left nut.

Why not install a fumoto valve? I had one on my 05 PSD and it made oil changes quick, clean and easy. About $22 IIRC. You can drain directly into empty gallon oil containers and shut off the flow as you switch containers.
