I have a 98 f150 4.2 5spd. transfer shift on the floor. when I try to engage the 4x4 won't go into 4H, light comes on on the dash. When shifting into 4L same thing, light comes on and transfer shifts into low but only to rear wheels. fronts not engaging in either range. slight clicking noise from under truck almost like an automatic trans when not fully engaged in park. Any ideas?

check your vacum lines to the fron. There should be two colored plastic type hoses that lead from behind the battery by the firewall to the front end. Pink and light blue I think, well mine are that color. If those are cut/leaking it will not engage your front end.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
Since your lights are coming on and all I wouldn't suspect anything electrical.
Also, remove your transfer case motor from the transfer case and have a buddy select the gear 2H 4H 4L and make sure the arm is actually moving in the motor to select your gear in the TC.
checked the vac lines and they seem to be fine. took the cover off the front difff. actuator and had someone shift the TC in and out of 2H to 4H and the actuator moves but not much maybe only 3/16". Does anyone know haw much this is supposed to move? Is it possible that there might be a minor vac leak or the actuator bad?
I lubed the actuator shaft today and am able to get it into 4x4, still seams a little sticky or maybe slow is a better word, but at least I can use it now. having no 4x4 in the U.P. of Michigan kinda sux. thanks for the help.
use it a little bit crawl under and lude it up again, should start freeing up and get easier with time glad it worked seems to be pretty common issue with an easy cheap fix.
Not meaning to hijack this thread but would the same conditions apply to a '97 F150 5.4l with an auto tranny ? Lights on the dash indicate fine but no 4X4 activation ? Same location and color coding for the vacuum lines too ?
May or may not also be connected but the last time I tried 4X4 without success I found a bit (less than a couple tablespoons) of greenish fluid on the snow under the front axle, as much as it pains me to mention it.
Thanks a ton to everybody for the priceless help here.
the things that the vaccum lines goto 4 the 4wd goo all the time and is cheap and easy to install allmost guarantee this is your problem seeing as you still go into 4 low you know all is well... try and see what happens i pretty sure there the two boxes on the firewall and it dotmatter what kind of shift auto or stick the 4wd is vac engaged try it out and thnk me later
