Exclamation Fuel additives and Regen

I am wondering if I have an issue with my 08 6.4? A couple weeks ago I took the truck into the dealer because of a CEL and they did a reflash at that time.I have been using Diesel Kleen for the past few fill ups and it has quieted the motor somewhat. No real change in milage but I seldom make extended trips so that may be the reason.
For the past few days now everytime I drive the truck it shows "cleaning the exaust filter" after it warms up.I have only been making short trips,14 miles twice a day to and from work so right about the time it completes the cleaning cycle I am home and shut the truck down.So twice a day now it shows the cleaning cycle.
The only changes that I have made is the fuel I am running now came from a different station and the Diesel Kleen. Any input will be helpful.

For one it's a good idea to get on the highway for awhile and let it
burn out any crap from your short trips. I tried that additive and was not impressed and stpped using it all together. I've gotten one message so far
and only have 1650 miles. You also might want to try getting your fuel
elese where and just see what changes take place. If you try all of these
and nothing changes then you may be onto something.
Any black soot in tail pipe ?

I am getting no soot in the tail pipe. I am going on an extended trip this w/e towing 8000lbs and have gotten my fuel from a BP station this time. Will update after I return.
One other odd thing is if I blank out the info center I do not receive the "cleaning" message but did get my low fuel warning as normal.Bring the info center back up and cleaning message appears for a short time, goes away for a couple miles and right back again.

We have used Diesel kleen since day one. We do not do much short trip city driving but when we do we regenerate more frequently then when running at higher speed on the interstate. We did not see a single regen on our 1200 mile trip from Ohio to Florida last month, all interstate speeds.

You might want to research information on these trucks in terms of cetane rating lubricity, etc to determine if a additive is useful.

richfaa I did check into the cetane rating and found all stations in my area either don't know or it is at the minimum of 40.Ford recomends 45 so I went with the Diesel Kleen to boost it up a few points.Anyone ever used Sea Foam in a 6.4? Used it every other tank in my 5.4 and it made a huge difference.Their web site claims it can be used in a diesel but am not sure if it can be used with the DPF?
BTW sure miss your area, lived in Huron till 93 when we moved.

I have been using the Motorcraft Cetane booster for about a month now. It seems to help the truck run better, with slightly better mileage. The REGEN can take up to 20 minutes, so stop & go routes can cause it to never finish the cycle.

You only use seafoam to clean the injectors. You pull the fuel filter, fill it up with Seafoam, put the filter back in, and start. I don't really trust that as diesel fuel additive, to further that, I don't trust anything that says it's a gas and diesel fuel additive.

You also need to really stretch your truck's legs every now and again. Go for a drive just for the hell of it; think or jam some music and enjoy the ride. You truck will thank you with better performance and fewer regens.

highway speed to properly go thru the cleaning exhust cycle. That is the big issue you are having.

As far as the message center goes, clearing the message is ok. The next time you need to go thru regen it will appear again.

Once you clear it off the screen, going thru the menu is the only way to tell if it is in regen as you described. All is working properly, you just need to run it a little.

I am not using any additives right now and don't seen the need, farther north i would.

maytag03. Our research indicated the same thing so we have used Diesel kleen since day one. Here in Florida we use Shell premium diesel. We know Huron well although we are on the road most of the time. Since I have a guage and monitor EGT all the time I can see a regen as soon as it occurs as the EGT's increase by 300/400 degrees.

Back from my trip and after one regen, all is normal.Truck/trailer weighed 16480 lbs and after hitting the interstate I ran it hard to get it hotter then normal.I figure I had gotten a bad batch of fuel so am glad I had only put in 20 gals.Mileage surprised me,I averaged 12.1 mpg, hand calculated and lie-o meter came out the same, for a 575 mile round trip.I did not drive the truck more then 5 miles without the trailer attached. It was hard to park the truck for the long weekend, just wanted to pull the trailer down the roads and pass most of the Dodges and Duramaxs I came up behind LOL.

Wanted to add to this thread. As far as I can tell my 6.4 HATES Diesel Kleen.Made a trip to Ohio towing my camper, grossing out at 17280 pounds.Used the Diesel Kleen regular formula at the start of the trip getting regens about every 250 miles.About 600 miles into the trip I got a CEL but the truck was still running well.Had it cleared while in Ohio but got no answer to the cause.Since it was cold up north I added the winter formula to help with gelling. On the trip back everytime it would go into regen I would be limited on my boost to below 10lbs till after it completed the regen. It felt as if I had the exhaust brake engaged during this time.Towing a camper through mountians with limited power can cause some real issues to say the least because I would not know when it was going to happen.
The truck goes in for the latest reflash and warranty issues saturday so am hoping this will stop this from happening.Anyone else tow and have problems during regens?

I use the Motocraft Cetane Booster and Lubricity enhancer in my 6.4. The engine seems to run a little quieter at idle as if it wasn't quiet enough compared to my old 7.3. I am not experimenting with other additives on a $60,000 truck. I don't care what they claim it is good for.

I think I am going to buy several bottles of the Ford Motorcraft brand and run that for awhile.I am thinking that the Diesel Kleen is producing too much ash/soot for the DPF to deal with.

I am using the Motorcraft product and am happy with it. I bought a case of it and use it at every fill up. A case looks like it will last quite a while and I am driving about 1500 miles per month.
