4x4 problems

I have an 03' 6 liter that the 4x4 is acting up,I thinks it's a vaccum problem. Today put it in 4 wheel drive (auto switch on dash) and the 4x4 light came on. I think I heard a pop sound and the 4 wheel drive kicked out but the 4x4 light was still on. I had the heat setting on the floor/dash pannel setting and it automatically switched to the defrost mode! Took it out of 4x4 mode and the heat switched back automatically again. confused I tried it all again and had the samething happen again. Could I have blown the seal behind the hubs or is their something else that could cause this? And I got out switched the hubs the hubs from auto to manual put the switch on the dash to 4x4 and the worked without changing my heat flow location.

any help is appreciated

Sounds like a vacuum leak. A friend of mine brought me an 06 that was doing the same thing. He would have his a/c running and switch to four wheel drive and air would blow out of the defrost and had to get out and manually lock in the hubs. It took about 15 seconds to find one of the vacuum lines going to a hub had tore loose and was flapping in the wind. The vacuum pump on the fender well runs the climate control doors and the hubs. When you switch to four wheel drive, and have a massive vacuum leak, your climate control doors go to default which is defrost. You said that when you manually lock the hubs in your climate control doors stay put when you turn the ***. If you had a vacuum hose blown, it should go to defrost when you turn the *** to lock in the transfer case. Since it doesn't, maybe locking in the hub manually is plugging the vacuum leak at one of your hubs. Should be easy to figure out which one it is by trial and error.
