Need help 6.0

Hi Everybody,
This is my first post. I have a 04 F-350 Lariat crew cab long bed, FX4, 6.0 automatic. The only modifications are K&N filter and straight pipe. Truck has 111598 miles on it with out a major problem. Had one sensor changed @ low mileage on warranty. 3 month ago had 2 days when truck was bogging down & belching black smoke, cleared up on its own. 2 weeks ago batteries were getting weak, installed new, shortly after began to start hard & run rough for first 20 miles or so. Now truck will only start with use of block heater. When accelerated past 1000 RPM engine starts surging to 1500 RPM to 500RPM about 1 second intervals while belching black smoke. Had diesel shop check readings,no codes and injectors showed good, with slightly low voltage. Have changed fuel filters, added fresh fuel with Lucas Fuel Treatment.Checked and cleaned EGR,only had light coat of soot. Changed EBP sensor and checked tube from exhaust manifold. Disconnected EGR, no difference. disconnected ICP sensor, no difference. Was getting ready to sell truck as I do not need heavy truck at this time. Plan to get smaller Ford at this time.Any advice on this problem would be appreciated. I would make anyone a good deal on this truck right now ! Other than current problem truck is in excellent condition. $15000

I have a F350 6.0 Power Stoke as well. I bought it previously owned and just love the truck. I have had it for one year now. I noticed last summer while idling, it started to surge and speed up and then back down again. It stalled a couple of times, and then the check engine like came on. It did it again occasioanally over the winter but nothing to worry about. I noticed this fall it starting to get worse and lately it's happening all the time, and only does it while idlingl Power is not a problem when stepping on it she runs perfect and lots of juice. I do not know where to turn. I changed the fuel filters and no luck. I can't get the plug out of the water trap under the frame to see if this is a problem. I need it as it is a service vehicle and it can't let me down now. Help!

Why in the world did you remove the best intake system and possibly screw it up with a K&N? I sure hope you didn't "dust" your engine! Do you still have the original air filtration system? Does the K&N require you to coat the filter with that red spray crap they use in the gas engines? If so, pull it all out and try to clean that red gunk from the intake.

Another possibility is that when you had the batteries replaced, the vehicle wasn't run far enough for the engine and tranny computers "re-learn" their strategies. Try to get it running (after you've checked the intake for that red stuff) and drive it for about 20 miles or so with at least two stops and shut offs.

Other than the above suggestions, I don't know! Good luck.

Very good point - the oil from those types of filters is known to coat the MAF sensor and cause issues.

Both of you are experiencing extremely similar problems to mine. EGR and possibly excessive moisture in the intake (both dealers said this), but the EGR for sure I have had several go bad, next the surging and shutting off??? well besides the EGR I had sticking injectors, and one stuck fully open, my truck, however, have no performance mods...all stock.
