Lightbulb LOOK HERE: CPS problems listed

I want to compile a list of common and not-common CPS related issues.

From Stalling to hiccuping to running rough...

Heres the idea: EVERYONE Add anything that you can remember (whether its from their own experience or things that you have read/herd) of things that have happened because of a CPS failure. PLEASE TRY TO STICK TO PROBLEMS THAT HAVE BEEN SOLVED BY CHANGING THE CPS. If you can take the time and put a link (from FTE) with the problem you are talking about that would be great.

After i feel like we have a good amount of bases covered I will compile the list of things with whatever links there may be and start a thread with that info it will be called (CPS Related issues) Hopefully if this works out i can get Guzzle to add it to the Powerstroke Help Network.

To make this easier on me please keep conversation in this thread to a minimal... So that it will be easier for me to make the list of CPS Related problems...

Thank you for your help i hope this works...

At 155k miles, I had a slight hiccup one morning that was barley noticeable. In the next 5 miles cruising at 55, it happened 4 or 5 more times, getting more noticeable each time. The final one was more like a cough (think intake backfire on an old gasser) and this cough set the check engine light. It seemed fine for the next mile or so. I came to a stop sign, then proceeded with the next 25 miles of my trip without any issues.

After the truck was shut down for about 2 hours, I started it back up and the CEL was off with no apparent problems. I went to a nearby mechanic that had just opened and found there was a code for the CPS fault. Swapped the CPS and no more problems for the next 100k or so.

I had bucking problems on the freeway and the truck would die while driving down the street. It would always re-start and drive fine and a couple of times it restarted all on it's own. This was right after I bought it and it had 61,000 miles on it.

I have always thought that was why the original owner had sold it.

Around 100k miles it flat out died a mile after leaving the driveway with no warnings. Only the battery and oil lights came on, no CEL. I coasted off the road where it re-fired immediately and ran long enough for me to turn around and get back on the road in the other direction. After it died the second time it refused to start. I got towed to a parking lot and when I got there the next morning with a new CPS, the truck fired right up on the old one. I still swapped it out and have 35k on this one.

In May of 07', I was on my way to the store, truck died, started it up and went around 100 yds, truck died, did this 3 times then it would not start. Got towed to the store. Called Ford dealer and they said my EBPS was bad. Went and bought a new one, installed it, no start. I got on my puter and found FTE. Guys told me about the CPS, went to ford, bought one for 190 something dollars. Read on here how to change it, did the install in my parking lot. Truck started right up.

BEEN HERE EVER SENSE. And loveing this place. I think I am a reguler now.

2000 Excursion 4x4 Limited, on the original, black Ford CPS. 82,080 miles on the clock.

Wife was driving the rig when it just quit on her. There was nothing. Tried to start it and she said it was like there was no fuel.

I had it towed home and the next day I bought a new CPS from the local International parts house and changed out the CPS.

My CPS went out in early 2008. (The day after the Ford Recall)
For a few weeks before i would have trouble getting it to start. Thought it was a fuel problem...maybe too cold or something along those lines. Then one morning it just would not start. Thats when i got online and checked all the forums. Finally figured out that if the tach doesnt move its almost always a sign that the CPS is at fault. Had it towed to ford dealer and they replaced it (they were not very happy about the fact that i didnt fall for thier $300+ diagnostic service - but that is another story)
Any way it seems that if you have a sympoms of hard starting, stumbling, etc that come and go-your cps may be on the fritz and it is a very easy thing to check - at least a good place to start.
Good luck,

I only had problems running the grey one, with bad CCT numbers. Other than that, I noticed the truck running a little rougher, so I swapped out the grey to a nice new black one from Jody.

Good point Brent. That should be pointed out here as well since some of the CPS symptoms now include a rougher running engine. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/7...-cps-test.html

My truck only had 35k on her when the first one went out. Every 4-5 time I would stop at a red light it would die, start right back up and all was good. did that for about a week. Found this site read about cps issues and not to buy from Ford. I located an International dealer and bought a new cps and all was good... untill the day after I received a recall letter from Ford. Truck now had 90k miles and told my self I was not going to mess with it since I didnt have any problems. well driving down the road it just died, coasted to the side and started right back up dove a couple miles died again. Went straight to the Ford dealer and had it replaced under recall. Got a new spare and carry it in the glove box just cause!

Two different trucks had CPS problems:

Old truck - '99 PSD supercab with 68K stalled when in a parking lot. Refired twice but immediately stalled again when I hit the go pedal. CEL and tach moved but would not run above idle. Had to change out in the parking lot with Ford black spare.

Current truck - '02 in sig. 88K when it stalled coming up on to a traffic signal. Refired and continued on. This happened 2 days after buying truck. No CEL. Picked up new IH spare from dealer. Been OK for 3 years now.

BTW, replaced one in a campground in Utah while on vacation for a retired couple with a E350 conversion RV. He couldn't start his RV after it sat for a couple hours after pulling into his campspot. Ran good for his cross country entire trip prior to that day. I replaced with my spare and all was good.

I've had several CPS related problems. First started with the truck hiccuping and loosing power when driving. Replaced with a new black CPS. Then purchased the new grey CPSafter recall.

Just last week, the truck started cutting in and out....I pulled codes and got CPS code!? So I went and bought another grey CPS. Installed it last week...the truck will idle like crap. Idle is rough and choppy and seems to idle a bit high. I know this CPS is no good. I plan to buy a black IH CPS and be done with this Ford garbage! These CPS problems have me fit to be tied!
