Not really an issue for pickup trucks. But for rifles, if I put one in the cab with me, the ammo is in the back. You are not required to lock a case with a rifle in it.
Handguns are different. Must be in a locked box if in the passenger compartment.
have you ever gotten pulled over with the rifle in the cab with you?
Yes I have, many years ago.
Unfortunately the truck I was driving sort of matched the one that was used by a guy who had left his house after pounding on his wife for a bit. I had 2 of my 22's, a pistol, a revolver and a couple of shotguns - myself and a buddy were on our way out to the desert. We got pulled over by the CHP out in Banning. They didn't fret about the guns - after they determined that neither of us were the perp.
What is your concern? Are you just heading to the range or inquiring about packing? I'm a long time firearms enthusiast, weapons and tactics trainer, and have been pulled over.
does having a trigger lock on the pistol count? i travel with everything in the cab of the truck but in the back seats. all guns have trigger locks on them and are in cases, none of the cases are locked, guns are on the seat ammo on the floor, idk if thats how it should be done but thats how i do it, never been pulled over

Do not go by what the BATF regs are when in CA.
The CA DOJ (Department of Justice) has certain laws governing firearms that usurp BATF regs.
