E van 5.0 intakes?

Hey all

I am new to Fords, so please don't flame me if this is a stupid question.

I was out in the junkyards this past weekend looking for parts and I was in all the E van engine bays for the first time.

The 88-ish 5.0 van upper intake looks BIG! Like almost GT-40 or something.

Would it be worth grabbing one next trip for stash? Or are they "low performance??

The .50 truck intakes are big inside.. bigger than any other stock Ford 5.0 or 5.8 intake including the GT40. You need both upper and lower parts to utilize it though, the port size and shape is unique. All the truck 5.0 motor use the same intake BTW.

Conanski your post doesn't make sense? What are you saying? What is a .50 truck intake?

move the decimal one point to the left to get 5.0...I'm sure it was a typo

Thanks for the replys!

I should have given more info, like intended application. I have a 90 Bronco with a stock 5.8. I am kinda eyeballin' a 393 stroker kit from Powerhouse in Bakersfield for the future, all cammed and dressed to pass the dreaded California Smog Check.

If I already have the "good" truck intake then I guess it's a wash.

Yeah fat fingers.. whatcha gonna do.

As for the intake, the 5.8 actually has significanly smaller runners than the 5.0... which defies all logic, and you'll want something significantly bigger than that for a deep breathing stroker. If you can't use an aftermarket intake then you may have to look for a GT40 style intake, there is a 5.8 specific lower for these but it is rare and expensive.

Here are the 2 truck intakes..

And here's what the GT40/Explorer/Cobra looks like...

If I remember correctly, Holley systemax intakes use the same or really similar ports to the stock 5.0 truck intake, do they also make a 5.8 version that might mate with the stock truck 5.0 upper?

I have never seen or heard of a Holley Systemax 5.8 lower.. but it would certainly open up possibilities.

Wow...........just................wow............. ..

Those square ports on the 5.0 look like they will flow RINGS around the 5.8................sheesh.............

Thanks for the scoop........talk about an eye opener!

Looks like I may be re-thinking things.

They might they might not. I dunno, I do know that my '92 E150 with a 351w made a LOT more power than our '88 e150 with a 302. They were even setup similarly. I've seen a trick flow or edelbrock lower manifold for the 351w that shares that same port design with the 302.

Same port as the stock 302 or same as their similar model to fit a 302? As far as I know only the Holley uses the same port shape as the stock 302 truck manifold.

Here's the TrickFlow 5.8 R-series, comes in 2 versions with an upper that takes either a 75mm TB or 90MM TB...

And here's the Edelbrock 5.8 truck Performer intake manifold. The smaller runners are pretty obvious here...

The Edelbrock Victor series has larger runners and would be better suited to a stroker or high performance 5.8.

I am building up a 5.8 for my F150 and have the stock EFI upper and lower. I was planning on putting it on but it does look restrictive. What needs to be done to convert to the Mustang style intakes on an F150?

The stock 5.8 intake is small compared to the aftermarket intakes but it's still capable of supporting 300hp, so if you're keeping the stock heads don't worry about changing it. Useing a car style intake means you have to do some custom intake plumbing and either use the car control cables(throttle and tranny), or modify the truck brackets so you can use those. Many of the car intakes are internally manifolded for EGR as well so you won't need the external EGR tube..assuming the heads you use have EGR ports(the stock heads do). That's about it, just bolt it on and plug in the injectors and sensors. Since this has turned into the intake manifold thread I'll post a pic of the Professional Products Typhoon that I have for my 5.8 project, I had it powdercoated crinkle black...

Nice looking intake!

My build is a mild one. I will be using GT40 heads with a little porting, Speed Pro H336CP pistons for about a 9.2:1 compression ratio and a Crane 444232 cam with 1.7 rockers. Its going to be a truck motor so if the stock intake can handle 300hp then I will be happy. I am hoping for an optimistic 275hp with a bunch of torque.
