Assembling my Winter Kit

As with every winter, I got a 2' milk crate, and bungee'd it to the tie down spots in the back of my truck. In it, I placed my typical "emergency kit" which consists of the following:
  • Windshield washer fluid - Deicer style - One bottle
  • Bungee Cords - Qty: 4
  • Jumper Cables - 20ft heavy duty
  • Tow Straps with hooks - 20ft - 2 of them - Rated 3000lbs
  • Coolant - 50/50 mix - 1 gallon
Anyone else keep a kit like this? What do you keep in yours? Suggestions?

Also, can anyone recommend a winch to mount under the front of my Excursion? I was looking at a brush guard with one. I'd like the option to operate it from inside the vehicle or out. Thanks for the input.

I would also recommend to get tow ropes with higher tow cap.

Hope this helps!

I don't know that i'm looking to replace the front end, though i'm open to the idea. I was thinking something more along the lines of bolting on. Do you have pictures that aren't on facebook, as I don't have an account there. Thanks.

Tire chains is a good idea! I did not think of that. blanket is good too, it was in my old kit, but for some reason didn't make it to the new one. I have 2 bottles of drinking water i keep in the pocket behind my seat, so that's a good one. Road flares are good too, but where can you buy them? I remember my old man bringing one home years ago and us lighting all sorts of stuff on fire with it, but that's about it.

My reasoning for all this is winters sometimes get nasty here, and there's some nasty windy roads that are quite hazardous if the weather is questionable, and people drive in it anyways. When this happens, I hop in my truck and tour the local roads and pull out people that are stuck, or if the vehicle is damaged, just take them home and let their insurance deal with it.

Srry bout that lol

Here are some pics from my webshots account:

Its not what you think. When i mean full front end replacement, i mean that it replaces the bumper. The part that replaces the bumper is made out of 4 inch steel tubing.

That's pretty nice. Does it have a place where you can mount a winch? Did you buy it on the internet or locally? I figured you meant it replaces the bumper, did you do the install yourself or have it done?

Wal-Mart? A good auto parts store in your area?

If you're being a good Samaritan (good for you!) then I would get a simple orange rotating light for your truck. I had one in my plow truck that plugged into my lighter.

Thanks! Mine doesnt have a place where you can mount a winch, but their are other front end replacement bumpers that can have a winch mounted to them. Mines a ranch hand and saposably ranch hand is the best for front end replacements. Ranchand makes front end replacements that can accept up to a 15000 pound winch from what i have heard. I bout mine from a local guy in texas. I payed $600 for it and fedex shipped it (to ohio where i live) for $300 (it weighs four hundred pounds). It bolts on to the frame rails where the existing bumper bolts go and alls it takes is you and 3 or 4 other ppl to mount it. It took me a half an hour.

Heres their website if your interested:

Legend Series Front Bumper Replacement

If you have any ques bout the bumper just ask me!

Keep plenty of fuel in the vehicle, especially when traveling treacherous roads. Glad to see survival items already included.

Put together a backpack and put extra clothes like tshirts, pants, underwear, etc. in it.

Thanks for the suggestions, it's just one of those things that I love to do every winter. You can use those rotating orange lights without some special license/permit? That's awesome, I may try to dig one of those up. Don't get me wrong, I like helping people. The real reason is because I love being out in the snow and driving about. Helping people is just kind of a bonus.

I rarely let my truck get below 1/2 tank, so fuel isn't an issue. Last year I had an extra set of clothes in my Expedition, but just out of habit, not sure why I didn't think of it for this.

Spare fuel filter.
Extension cord for block heater, in case you have to overnight at a motel in 10 degree weather.

You dont need any permits (at least in oh). In oh when you have a amber light bar, you can only have the lights on when your helping someone out or for example, plowing. Only city vehicles can have them on while they are driving.

one option for the winch up front is the hidden hitch. Then just slip in your winch when you need to and when not in use, in the back and out of eyesight. That way no need to replace the front bumper.
