Hi all, I bought this tranny today. I might have wasted my money. It fits my flathead and I didn't have a tranny for it. 50 dollars won't hurt me much. I was told it came out of 51 f-1. It's yoke is rigid secured with a nut...no sliding to it. I'm guessing that the sliding part was on a two piece drive shaft. Am I correct about that ? Will I be able to use this in my f-1 ? I'm havin doubts about my purchase. Any info out there would be appreciated. There are two pics in my gallery Tim

Get the numbers from the transmission case and post them here.
If it fits the engine you have I see no reason it wouldn't work in your truck.
It is probably out of an F-2 or 3 and had a two piece d-shaft.
You will need a slip joint somewhere.
You're right Ross, that sure looks like a spur gear 4 speed that was optional on 48-52.
I'm looking at the shifter differences between the 4 spd spur gear and the 4 spd synchro-helical gear trannys on pages 305 and 309 of the 48-52 Truck Chassis Parts Catalogue.
The pictures in his gallery show three tubes on top (indicating a 4spd) and that tall conical shift lever cone coming out of the top (see page 305) says spur type. On the synchro tranny shifter (shown on page 309) that is a double hemisphere not a cone, and the back half of the shift rod housing is a solid flat square, not three tubes as his pictures depict.
I'm with you - I think this is a 4 spd spur gear tranny.
Hooray!! I don't have to worry about the 4 spd tranny and how to use it anymore. Yesterday I found an unmolested 3spd top loader for an f-1. It had just a small bit of water in it with all the oil ..... yuck! stinky... couldn't hardly wash it off my hands. I took the shifter off and the gears and synchros look good to me . Didn't see any chips, It shifted fine. I drained the gunk out of it throught the plug in the bottom. It's an open drive line and it has the larger two detent screws on the shifter body. My question is : How do I go about cleaning it up inside. Can I just wash it out with some kind of cleaner?
I'd wash it out with some diesel fuel. It's cheap, at least compared to small spray cans of degreaser, and it do a good enough job of getting the gunk out. If not, us a commercial degreaser.
