The batteries are original, and I just had to charge them for the first time ever. The truck sat for two weeks without starting this time. How do you know if it's just cold out, or if the batteries are going bad?
Welcome to FTE Dave. You can get your batteries load tested for free at the auto parts stores. I'd guess you've reached the end of the life of your factory batteries. You might be able to get by for a while just keeping them charged up, but with the glow plugs pulling the extra power during winter, I'd say you're probably better off just changing them.
Just make sure to replace both batteries at the same time, or the old battery that you don't replace will pull down the new battery.
If you had to charge the batteries after sitting 2 weeks they have probly had the lick unless you have something drawing on them
normally when I charge a battery it is to get the vehicle to the battery store unless I can find another gremlin that is causing the problem
if they are getting bad it's best to replace them, otherwise you are stressing alternater and starter
6 years on batteries ain't bad! I would say they are most likely toasted! Even if they load test okay, 6 years is well beyond the normal life of batteries. I would replace them if it was me......just for peace of mind!
The batts in my '03 lasted almost 6 years. You've had your's for 7, they have given you all they had, time to recycle them. Just hope the next ones last that long...
Question, Whats harder on the battery, lots of starts or the age of battery.
I only have about 72K on my truck.
Actually heat and viberation are the biggest battery killers
Guess the heat part is why none of my origonal batteries have lasted over 3 years, and have never had sort of a bad battery, they were either good or grave yard dead
