EBPV question

I tried the search feature first but couldn't find the answer I was looking for, so thought I'd bounce it off you guys (and gals). When it's cold out and the high idle kicks on, and the EBPV starts doing its thing, is it normal for the EBPV to close for about 3-4 sec. then open for 5-7, then close again for 3-4 sec., then open again, etc. etc.? See, I always thought it was supposed to close and stay closed for as long as it takes the engine to get warmed up to the preset temp. But this one constantly (when its cold out) kicks in and out for just several seconds at a time. Normal or not?

No it should not open and close like that. It opens when you push the brake or the throttle and of course when it gets warm. The tube may need to be cleaned. Here is a good link for that Welcome to guzzle's Exhaust Backpressure Sensor Cleaning Maintenance Web Page

Yeah, it's a possibility, although I just had it off and cleaned it earlier this summer, had to replace the EBP sensor too. I wouldn't think it'd need cleaned already, but who knows, just thought I'd make sure that wasn't the way it is supposed to work before I started digging into things. I just leave mine on my '96 unpluged so it never works, and I wasn't sure how the '99 & newer ones were set up to work. Any other ideas on a possible cause for this?

M.J. when it cuts off are you giving fuel to it? mine will do it sounds like its sending boost to another place then when i get into it say to climb a little hill... it will cut off then come back on when it levels out again so i think its normal!

really, that's interesting. It will come and go all by itself when the rig is just sitting there idleing. Yesterday I drove the rig to town (only the second time I've drove it since the HPOP) and noticed the boost sound just like you are talking about, come and go clear into town. Well after the truck was warm and up into the normal temp range. I thought, surely it's not still supposed to be closing. But maybe it is????? still confused.

Well, that's just the thing, it doesn't stay opened or closed, it still moves fine, it's just getting a signal from something to open/close, open/close. I think I'll just unplug the stupid thing for now. Heck it's the wifes rig so who cares if it takes a little longer to warm up! LOL Just kidding folks. How warm does the engine have to be before it stops getting signals to work (EBPV), I was just thinking that I got clear into town and the needle on the temp guage (cheap factory in dash) was just a needles width up into the "normal" range, is it possible that the 'puter was still wanting that engine warmer?

Yes the PCM is still wanting it to work the truck will be good and warm before it stops and opens for good. On my truck it stays open when the temp comes up to operating range where it normally runs.

It is possible that maybe there is a loose connection at the brake sensor causing it to open and then sensing it's ok to close. Not sure. But the brake and throttle are what cause it to open.
