I have a 1988 Ford F-150 with the 302. I'm sure someone out there might have heard of this. I swapped AOD trannys because the old one did not have a functional OD. This is the old style not the electronic style AOD. I swapped the trannys and the new (used ) does not shift even over 25 MPH. This transmission did work when removed from the donor vehicle. A buddy of mine said there is a 5 or 6 prong shift sensor on the transmission that could possibly be why the transmission is not shifting. has anyone ever heard of this or have any suggestions? I thought the AOD transmission I have was hydraulic mostly but I do have two electronic cables that hook up to it.
You must be sure that the throttle position sensor rod is adjusted properly or the transmission will not shift or operate correctly. Do a search on the sight and you will find posts about adjusting the rod. A rod that is incorrectly adjusted can destroy the innards of the transmission quickly because it adjusts line pressure as well.
I can engage each gear while sitting in my driveway with the brakes on just fine. P to R, R to N, N to OD, OD to D, D to 1 and the transmission engages as expected (hardly able to tell when going from OD to D to 1 but R to N and N to D you feel the truck wanting to move forward or backward. What's happening is when you take it for a test drive and set it to OD, or D the tranny doesn't even shift up. the engine just starts to rev real high.
