Question tires and speedo

99' Ranger XLT, 2.5,long bed, comes from the factory with 225/70/15, and I've replaced with this size, till now, as I am considering putting on a more agressive tread tire for this coming winter(just on rear axle). The problem is that the tire I'm looking at only comes in a 235/75 series size-which make this tire about an 1.5 inches taller than I have now(info from tire spec chart). How much is this going to throw off my speedo-and is there any way I can do a correction, as its an electronic speedo, and not a cable driven type. I know there are other tires to fit my size, but these are a good deal,(name brand) and the height issue will be negated when I put in a couple of sand bags. What ya'll think?????

Well it's going to change your final drive ratio for sure & with the 4banger you might not like the result.

You can get an idea of how much change it'll make, by cyphering the % difference in revs/mile posted for each tire.

I believe the computer can be reprogrammed so that the speed-o output is corrected, but I don't know if a tire shop in your area can do it, maybe only a Dealer can, so check that out too.

Check the "Tech Info" thread atop this forum, I believe there used to be a link to a "tire size calculator", to cypher the difference it'll make.

Some thoughts for pondering.

Go back to the Tech Info page & scroll down toward the bottom & find automotive calculators & click on that, then find the tire size calculator & enter your particulars & it'll give you the differences in speed, at different RPM for your differential ratio & tire size dia difference.

Mine shows that I am going about 2-5 mph slower than what I really am. I have 235's and they are great tires especially with the 4.10 gears. That high rev. 2.3 can get off the line quick! I have surprised many a vehicle out there that under-estimate that 2.3.

Update on tires--had 2 Goodyear Wranglers(w/Silent Armor) installed (rear only-4x2) on my Ranger Wednesday, and they ride great, quiet with beefy tread- found a tire size calculator, speedo diff is not that bad- 3-4 mph's more at 60 mph is negligible- couple of sand bags in the box- if I get stuck now it's my fault...

Thumbs up tire try-out

Wendell and Pawpaw, thanks for your replies to this thread-got the chance today to really see how these tires handle snow-in a word 'GREAT'-we got 3.5-4" of white stuff overnite, and with just 3 bags(210#) in the box, off we went without a single tire spin. These things hook-up great, without pulling away from a light doing a 45 degree down the road-straight as an arrow. I don't have to keep shifting to find the right gear so I don't torque it to death..LET IT SNOW, LET IT SNOW, LET IT SNOW!!!!!!!!

Good to hear you got the speed-o all figured out & the new rubber with weight in the bed is working out.

Also a full tank of gas helps too. At 6lbs/gal X 19gal= another 114 lbs or so of weight, depending on the size of our gas tank.

honestly I did the same tire swap on my 99 4x2 and noticed the speedo is still within 1-2 mph of the fixed and mobile radar signs. I also noticed no real towing power difference with my 5000# camper. I can only attribute this to the softer sidewall on the taller tire making the rolling diameter very close.

On my Jeep Wrangler with the same tires, it was up from the stock 215/75-15 and noticed still a very minimal real world difference in speedo.
