Okay so i had the seals, hubs all that stuff in the front end replaced about 2 mths ago because they were not engaging right, when was in for the engine work i asked them to check it again, (they said it worked good in the parking lot?) because during hunting season i would get stuck on wet grass and 4wd would not work unless i manually locked the hubs into lock position. any ideas as to what is happening!
I only have 4wd if i manually lock the hubs it wont lock in auto?
I have the same problem with my feed truck (07 F-350). I works when its at the shop but not when i need it. I works every now and then at home. If anyone knew the problem I would like to know to.
Little while ago I got stuck at the landfill hauling out some c**p from a job-site. It was really wet, and the auto hubs didn't lock up, so I've had to lock it manually.
After this accident I did some reading, and in my understanding the auto hubs will lock up if the wheels are moving some. I know it sounds weird, but I did a little test, and it's true.
not for me dcaddi, i can switch it to 4wd and spin the back wheels all day wont engage...tried backing up everything. only works if i put in manual? cant figure it out.
I just went outside and did the test really quickly so I can write it down.
Start up your truck, leave the switch in 2WD hi and reach around your front wheels and you will (should) be able to spin your U joints/shafts freely. Go and turn it to 4WD hi in park, engine running and go check your shafts again. It should be locked, or get locked after a little move on them. It could take a couple of spins. If this doesn't happening, than your auto hubs doesn't work for some reason, what could be vacuum related, or the seals in the hubs.
I had the same prob with my 05. Mine ended up being a vaccum switch. It is located on the inner fenderwell on the pass side of the engine compartment. It's about 60 bucks from Ford.
