It has been cold for a few weeks here now and the truck has been starting well cranked right up right away with about 10 seconds of smoke. I have let the truck sit 3 or 4 weeks without really driving it. Last weekend I drive it about 10 miles and it smoked a bit longer with a bit more grunt oil levels good. Last night I went to crank it and it gave a grunt like it did this mornining (video) and it smoked out the valley. I went to check my oil and it was a 1/4 down on the full mark (no signs of leakage) and it has developed a slightly higher knock then a few weeks ago. I have ordered a stancor GPR and was planning on GPs in a couple of weeks ( .01 ones). But I am worried I got bigger problems now. The batteries and the alternator are new(last year). I also use Schaeffers 9000 (about 1K/3months on the oil change). I known I had GP problems from last year but this year I am worried about the sudden oil consumption.
Your video link didn't work. Synthetic oils will have a different sound than regular oil, so keep that in mind. I'm not sure about your smoke out the valley unless it's your CCV. I've noticed different oils produce different amounts of smoke out the CCV, so that's something else to consider.
I don't think 10 - 20 seconds of smoke are an issue with the cold weather and AIH delete. Don't know what to say about the grunt. Can't quite picture what your describing there.
Something is most definitely up. I am sure it is as cold if not colder here the last week and a half. It was 24 degrees this am, and I had about 1-2 seconds of smoke if that, and the truck sat from about 3pm yesterday and was not plugged in. It did romp for about 3-5 seconds put just a puff of white smoke. I hate to say it Justin, but I think something is surely amiss.
I may be just use to the sound of new starter but it souded a little puny starting
Did you check battery voltage
When mine started oil consumption it was passing at turbo I guess, after it was replaced no more oil usage
I run my truck every day and when i,m at work with no plug in mine smokes just a little bit at startup but goes away after a minute or two. The smoke looks white not blue, glow plug issues i thinks..Try topping of your oil and plugging it in and running it for a week and see what you got. Good luck JD.
I herd my EBPV for the first time on my new motor this week! I was starting to worry that it wasn't hooked up right. But it was 39 the other morning so i let it warm up for a few and it kicked on and sounded great!!!
I have heard my EBPV kick on last week but it wasn't this cold. The smoke is all white no blue. The turbo does leak oil around the EBPV and the pedistal. But it has never lost that much oil. The truck always turns over well. I'll find out more when I get my GPR on the truck, I will check the batteries tomorrow or so. After a while it does clean up but I have noticed at one point in time back in the summer putting boat back into the car port she was puffing a bit of white smoke.
I don't believe it is the turbo going south I plan on gutting the EBPV in the next few months when i can save some money up.
Justin,
My truck did the exact same thing last year, but a lot worse. Change those GP and the GPR and you'll be set. Now I get one puff of white smoke and that's it. I don't care how cold it gets. And that's without it being plugged in.
That smoke and the way it starts reminds me of my 96 when it was cold and needing glow plugs.I believe that's your smoke problem I don't know about your oil.
