ok, soooo i got this big girl running back on gasoline, had to put a new gas tank in it, new fuel lines, fuel filter, and carb. when i put the new tank in it, the sending unit was pretty filthy (so im thinking this is the problem) the fuel gage does not work, but that could be the cluster could it not? i dont really wanna go buy a new sending unit, spent enough converting it back lol...
also, the thing wont stay in 4x4, i have to reef on the lever to get it into locked 4x4 with the truck off, other wise the transfer case is grinding like mad... but you shut it off or romp on the gas and it knocks itself out of the lock position... what gives?! in 4low it works great, but i cant drive in that lol
maybe its something to do with the body lift on the truck? some clearance issue maybe? i dunno its too cold and snowy to crawl around under the truck at the moment....
another issue, it has a c6, it wont shift into 3rd gear, just drives in 1st and 2nd... any ideas? whats the best thing to do? find a new transmition or rebuild?
oh, and i have not forgoten about pics of this beast, my camera got crushed by a horse (dont ask) so as soon as i get or borrow one, its gotta wait...
Ok, ill take a stab and what i can kinda help/give advice on.
Regarding the cluster, there are many of those around, i would try swapping a cluster from another truck out and seeing if it was that before replacing the fuel sending unit, if you dont wanna spend the extra cash (sounds like a new sending unit should be put in there anyways though!) Clusters can go bad.
As for the transfer case, I dont know much about them, but if you hear grinding, that cannot be good. I would be tearing into it before I drive it around too much. Is it a married or divorced transfer case? I kinda doubt it would be due to the bodylift, but would never hurt to check, get a bud to go and shift it, and crawl underneath and look (dont be a pansy, its not THAT cold yet!! haha)
For the tranny, I personally think it all depends with how long your gonna keep the ol gal. If ya dont plan on getting rid of it for along time, rebuild it, get it beefed a little and you will be happy as hell ya did. Ive heard that they arent all that bad to tear apart, but havent ever tried one myself.
I would guess that with the body lift your linkage is not adjusted correctly any more. This could be why it is jumping out of gear. Maybe try disconnecting the shifter and using the linkage underneath to put into gear then see if it stays in. Just a thought
Is it full time 4wd. if it is i would get rid of it and find a c6 and np205 gear driven part time transfercase. way stronger and if you need a tranny might as well get the transfercase as well. shouldn't be hard to find.
Tansfer case issue is defiently caused by your linkage being messed up due to your body lift, same thing happened on my 1985
Tranny problem could very well be a simple vacum leak.
check the linkage on the transfercase.
spray some lube on all the joints. you may have to make a drop bracket because of the BL
i have heard of c6's having shifting problems and even stop working completely because the fluid hasn't been changed in a long time.
also like what was said it could be a vaccume leak. not sure if it have a vaccume controlled valve body but give that a check also
yup, got the 4x4 working good now. looked underneath it was just barely touching the floorboard when put into 4x4 so i put a big dent in it for some extra clearance, also re-adjusted the linkage so now it works great
havent gotten at the transmition yet, gonna check it out this weekend, but flushing the fluids would be a good idea while im workin on it...
also decided im just gonna buy a new sending unit, a new one is 50 bucks so why not lol
and i err, uhh, spoiled myself by ordering a set of fenderwell exit headman headers dunno how i'd like to run the exhaust yet tho...
i cant remember if i mentioned it or not, but someone asked if the truck sounds different on propane vs gas? well it runs alot smoother and quieter (not so harsh sounding) but i also adjusted the timing on it and set up the carb properly (who knows if the propane was set up right? or the timing was right for propane?) but it runs awesome now and deffinatly has more power
It`s good to hear you`ve got at least some of it solved, one at a time is usually how it works.
It will have about 10-20% more power on gasoline, the compression ratio isn`t near high enough for use with propane fuel.
I'd beg different on propane power from gas. When I was with the towing company out here in manitoba we had 5 trucks on propane and 3 fords on diesel. The propane had 454 and 400 ,350. I know their chev motors but they had no lack of power ,the main thing with and motor on propane have to be calibrate properly and The ignition system has to be working at peek preformance. If not they'll run like a dog or they will backfire though the carb and melt the butterfly values out and their you sit.
Ooooh, I'm likin that rig Kirk! One thing I really like about this kinda truck, is you can REALLY use them as trucks. Not just big cars. Bombing through a field, blasting through the mud/snow, or crashing through the bush. Sweet truck.
