Is it possible that dropping the gas tank, replacing the fuel pump and filter, and reassembly would cause the check engine light to come on after the repair? 2000 Explorer XLT, V-6, 73,000 miles
Dealer says would not be cause - try driving through several cold start cycles - or disconnect battery, let sit and then reconnect to see if light goes out. Have tried several cold start cycles, light still on. Next trying battery disconnect but would like opinions.
It's more to do with drive cycles than cold start cycles. You may not have driven it far enough yet to reset the computer. Disconnecting the battery ground is another way to reset the computer. It's commonly done and won't hurt anything. Leave it disconnected for several minutes to make sure it resets. If the CEL comes back on then get it scanned somewhere and post the trouble code(s).
Thanks for the comments, rrgone...and have done disconnect last night just have not had chance to drive. But the more important part of my question is if this kind of repair could set a check engine light on - the dealer insists it would not, and for my own comfort with the dealer's repair facility, I'm looking for a second or third or more opinion(s)...if such a simple answer can be given on this - I understand if there are too many variables to have a simple answer on the cause/effect if that is the case.
I would think it could be possible.. but your right without more information it is hard to tell.. I know the CEL will come on if the gas cap is left off and you drive it because of the loss of vacuum.
Now that you have reset puter (power off), wait until the MIL comes on again, scan for code and if it is related to evac system, possible that you have a leaky connection (hoses, gasket, ect) on and/or around fuel system. May need smoke to locate small leak.
