computer timers

I am looking for input on computer timers, I need to have it where my kids can log on for their allotted time and when it is gone it is gone. it needs to be flexible as far as when they can use it, or chose to save it for later. also monitoring where they go.
I don't have bad kids but if the computer is left un locked they will spend all day and all night on it and nothing else gets done.
oh yeah free would be good also.

A responsible adult works best. Software will not tech your kids to be responsible or take your place. You can't be there all the time (for the rest of their lives) so talk to them, check the computer, & trust then since they are good kids. Change is happening so fast that you & I can not keep up with them. I just heard yesterday that some are smoking the leaves of a flower now. Maybe I am feeling a bit old too. Good luck with them & hopefully they turn out just like you.

You cant try Netnanny, but it costs and not sure if it does everything you want..

Myself, I would just put a BIOS password that requires you to unlock the PC for them to use it..

I don't think you will find any software that can be flexible.. If you set the timer to stop what happens when they are doing their homework and the timer knocks them off??

Just set a minimum amount of time they can be on to start and then they can earn more minutes by doing chores..

Usually the software way is inconvienient even for the parents, having to enter passwords to access what they want..

My 2 cents

This is the best advice right here. Software can't take the place of good parenting.

being there is the best option....but you cannot be there ALWAYS and FOREVER....no matter how badly you wanna be

check with your local library.....ours has it set up for 30 minutes per day for online access

and if you only use it for 12 minutes, you can log back in late for the other 18......

Not sure if this is appropriate for your application and unfortunately it isn't free, but...

I would like to find a way to block a computer from using a proxy server. The kids at our schools are always going to sites not approved(yes xxx too) and the teachers dont know how to stop them. With 30 kids on 30 differant computers at the same time with only one teacher you cant stand over them. The kids have found ways to by-pass the so called safe guards used by the system by using proxy servers. Hell I cant even figure out how to use one yet myself.
