I picked up one on Vetran's Day. I like it so far, no problems so but only +200 miles on it. I sold a 97 Ranger, SC, 4x4, Splash so it does ride a bit better.
The Sync is cool but I haven't figured out anything other than the phone part.
It calculates milage somehow. City driving shows 16.4 MPG and it's rated 17/24 MPG. It came with a full tank of gas. First time filled, figured to 22.9 MPG on 99% city driving. It's got this capless fill tank and I'm not sure how much to pump after it kicks off! On my Ranger, I could fill it right up the same all the time but on this one, I'm not sure and didn't want a gas bath! I may have short filled it but that's still a big difference between 17 and 22.9 MPG!!
I notice TV ads that imply employee prices to everybody. I'm a retired Ford worker and looked at the prices again on-line. The incentive on my Escape Limited, 4x4, 3.0L went from $2500 to $1000 in the last few days!
I bought an 08 mariner 4x4 instead of an 09 escape because of the 5,000 dollars worth of rebates. My 3.0 has 40 less hp than the 09 3.0, but moves the merc quit nicely. The merc also has a 4 speed auto instaed of the 6 peed like the 09's. However, we have been averaging 20.6 mpg around home and got 24 mpg on a trip. It's not even broke in yet, were well pleased. We like it much better than our 01 escape and we loved it.
The TV ad mentions up to 5 or 6K off but the Ford XYZ webpage states up to $2500 on this new campaign featured on TV. I poked/picked a few models but the highest off I seen was $2000 off.
I read in a Flex forum where somebody stated that they were getting 31/36 MPG but it's EPA is 17/24 MPG. That's way out of line.
I wonder why I calculated 22.9 MPG with 99% city driving? I used the pump reading plus a calculator. Unless the pump cuts off wwwaaaayyyy too soon??
Just bought the wife an 09 AWD V6 Limited with all the toys. Its a real nice little SUV. The V6 is very quick teamed with the 6speed auto, shifts real smooth.
First two tanks of gas are in the 18-19 mgh range, thats with 90% city driving, compared to 12-13 with the Explorer we replaced thats a great start.
For some reason the seats do not feel that comfortable to me, very stiff , but they may just need a little break in. No complaints from the wife so far.
im thinking of getting one for my wife now thats were having a baby. only thing is i might have to sell my 07 fx4? yuk..
I test drove a 2009 XLT V6 4WD last week. Compared to my 2002 it had way less wind noise and I thought the new motor and tranny made it really quick. Still some engine noise when you get on it and driving it made me realize just how worn the suspension on my 150,000 mile '02 is - needs struts/shocks!. The new employee pricing is about the same bottom line I was offered last week with the $2500 discount. Either say, about $4 grand off a $27,000 sticker. Pretty sweet deal.

What's your technique for using the capless fill? Rely on the pump shutting off and that's it or adding a bit more?

I fill the vehicles once a week, have been going to the same station for close to 30 years. I never top off, just let the auto shut off work. Did the same with the new Escape.
As far as calculating mileage, over several tanks, its all going to average out. I expect mileage to improve as the engine breaks in, I also know from experience if the wife gets 20 mpg, i would get 22-23, driving the same roads. Women tend to think the gas and brake pedals are On/Off switchs.
Thanks for the great info guys.. Wife is looking for some thing and as thoughts of an Edge but i keep pointing her to the 09 Escape.. Did anybody test drive the Edge first before deciding on the Escape?

I drove the Edge and the MKX, they are very nice, much bigger as you know. The wife says they look like "minivans' that took care of that with her.
The size was also a big issue with her, the Escape is easy to drive and park in town, much more so then the WIDER Edge. She also likes the fact the Escape looks like an SUV. It looks like an updated version of the Gen 1 Explorer, which we think is a classic from the styling standpoint.
She loved her Explorer, it was tough to see it go, but it was time

I've been going to the same station for many years too but I know that some pumps vary lots on their shut off point. I try to use the same pump if I'm checking MPG.

I test drove just about every SUV that was smaller or lighter than the Explorer. We have owned a Series 1 1993 XLT Exporer years ago and replaced it with an Escort in 1998. That car would not die. So many miles in 10 years and it was still going. Finally I was tired of looking at the little beast and started a search for a replacement. The Edge was nice, but there just wasn't anything about it that was calling to me.
My wife was going to be the driver, so I know she hates to fill up and that kept me looking at the smaller SUVs. Drove the Escape, Mariner, Tribute, Suzuki, Sportage, Sorento, Torrent, Chevy whatchamacallit, Honda CR-V, Toyota Highlander and the little brother (they have no soul/no character), even the VeeDub. No dice. The Escape is what I, and more importantly she liked. The Ford dealer was being a jerk about the price and rebates. This after us having bought cars and trucks there for over 30 years and 23 vehicles!!! I left, my wife was mad at the way they treated us.
The Mercury dealer didn't have what we wanted, in stock.
Went down to the Mazda dealer and made a better deal in about 20 minutes on the same set of wheels as what the Ford dealer had available. Except it says Mazda on the outside, that is.
After four months, it's an 08. We are still happy. It has almost 8K miles on the clock. Not a single problem! Great SUV, fun and easy to drive. I'd recommend one to anyone that is in the market for a great experience with a Ford.
