Horn Options?

Ok...so I need to install a horn....yelling angrily from inside the cab at idiot drivers does not appear to be effective.

What are some ideas?

I like the volume of those air-horn kits, but the compressor can be a pain....not to mention a resevoir tank, etc...

I like the sound of those german train horns...but that could be hard to find...and likely 24v....

Any suggestions? Transplants?

I put a pair of big rig blaster electrics on my '67. They are std electrics, look like regular horns, with a hi and lo. Pretty good sounding.

I like the "air" versions, but even the little ones with the little compressor needs oil and maintenance to make them work good. I had one years ago and usually by the time you need it the little compressor was "stiff" and it barely made any sound. Maybe they work better now? I know the version you are thinking of, and they are true air horns, but ya keeping the air cylinder filled is a pain, though I think they offer a compressor version.

I know where you can get a 5chime train horn(a real one, not a chrome repop). I think they take a 1" feed line so don't think it would last long in a pickup!! Love to have it for my Mack, but I think he wants $1K for it. Really cool though.

Or hang a sign: "Horn broke, watch for finger" LOL!!

Spend a little, get a lot.

Find a 1970's Cadillac or Lincoln in a boneyard and remove the triple "trumpet" horns, install them on your truck.

The BLAST will mimic a train horn, you won't have to mortgage the farm to buy the setup, and...you won't have to find a place to mount that huge reservoir tank.

Where'd you find those? Do those Interstate "Truck stops" have them?

So....are those electric with no air needed? Sounds like a wiener!

I'm thinking I want something that can go the furthest towards soiling the pants of the other driver.....lol

My *other* idea was to use the '74 Beetle Horn! I don't think I could even take myself seriously that way though....

go to a truck shop and get an air horn. They sound wicked! Everyone looks around to see where the semi is that honked at them. An air tank is handy to run tools off of and air up tires if necessary. I install a lot of pacbrake prxb exhaust brakes that come equipped with an air compressor. they're maintainance free, and work well. I bet many others are the same way. Obviously you're talking over $100 for the whole setup, but if your budget allows for more than the '70's lincoln or caddy horn, that's the way I'd go.

Tri-tone trumpet horns. These have been around since the 1930's.

E-lectric: no compressor, no reservoir, no hassle.

The original horns, btw were adjustable.

Turning the adjustment screws can make 'em squeal like a stuck pig!

Peeps look around expecting to see Porky Pig, but he's nowhere to be seen!

Ok, so I found a set of these and am in a bidding war at Ebay over them.....they're at $76 now....what is a reasonable amount for me to pay without going overboard? That is, how many will I find if I let this one go?...is it worth it to spend over $100 or $150?

Qwist on a bicycle!

76 bucks? 100 bucks? 150 bucks? For that price you could buy the whole car!

Why buy them on fleabay? Are they any good? What's the guarantee?

Go to a yard, for 20 bucks, prolly less, remove them from a Cattle-Hack or a Lincoln...find a hot battery, cover your ears and test!

I think my problem with local salvage is they rarely seem to have anything old any longer....almost everyone that I find is recent heaps....stuff from the last 10 years only...they always go on and on about how they "had to crush all them old cars 'cause nobody wanted 'em...."

Are there any places that specialize in hacking up these....I found one in Oklahoma, I think it was...but could only leave a message...

As for the "fleabay," I've really never had anything but great experiences with everything I have bought through Ebay...

Luckily I still know of some old backwoods yards and the "Pull-A-Parts" still bring in the oddities...like '62 Galaxies, '75 Dart cop cars, '72 Matadors.

Call or visit any wrecking yard, ask them to put 1970/76 Cadillac and/or 1973/79 Lincoln on their nationwide computerized HOT LINE.

If there any of these locally, they'll show up with who has them.

Here in LA LA Land, the pick-a parts have dozens of these old piles at every yard.

If anyone knows of a good source for these, please let me know.....

So far the prices on Ebay have gone from $19.99 to a "Buy it now" of $99.99 in the last week......

I've hit 4 local yards so far...and though I can find some of these old cars, all the horns are missing in every single one. Plus, the yards out here apparently do not subscribe to the "national look up" as they all roll their eyes at me when I ask.....
