Paintless Dent Removal

Hey folks. Here's the problem - The other day I was loading some stuff over the top of the tailgate and hit it with a glass block. It left two dents, each about the size of a nickel. It didn't chip the paint but the dents are there none the less. The bodyshop manager at the dealership told me that there is a Paintless Dent Removal guy that is there once a week and he could probably fix it for about $150. Sounds high to me but I have a couple of questions:

1. Does it really work or is it just hype?

2. If it does work, can anybody tell me how?

Hate to sound stupid but this is news to me. Used to be that you just got it in to the shop and got the dent repaired / painted. I hate to throw away $150 if it is going to leave any trace of the dent. Would I be just as well off to just have the tailgate repaired and painted?

Thanks for any help.

John

Ask for a guarantee in writing that the removal will be to your satisfaction otherwise no charge. I have taken a dent out of a panel by heating it with a heat gun and then applying dry ice to the area and the thermal shock caused the metal to resume its former shape with no damage to the paint.

Thanks for the info. Like I said, I had never heard of this before but thinking back now, we had a bad hail storm several years ago and I think these guys were here then. Anyway, I may try it but I just hate to shell out the $$$. I will follow your advice though, and get it in writing. Thanks again.

I've seen this done many times in the past, I work at a auto dealer, so these guys come by on a regular basis.
Some are better than others...get the guarantee!!!
t's all about knowing how to move metal in my opinion, still, stripping the paint, pulling the dent, filling if nec and painting/clearcoat...by the time your done you probably will exceed the $ 150...and it still might not match your color...something to think about.

Thanks again for the advice guys. I'm going to schedule it pretty soon. Good point about the cost of the bodywork, paint, etc. vs. trying the Paintless first.

yes it can be done. Like they said, some are better than others. I am an insurance adjuster and I use them all of the time. I have very little complaints about the PDR work I pay to have done. Usually complaints are BEFORE the work is done, and it is because they want paid for conventional repairs, then have the repairs done PDR anyway and want to pocket the difference. The PDR repairs do seem high, but they base what they charge not on what it takes them to do the work, but how much they are saving you over conventional repairs.

I once paid $1800.00 to remove hail dents on a Ford Ranger, and the PDR guy repaired it to the customers satisfaction in less than 8 hours. That is some SERIOUS profit considering there is no material involved. But it would have costed me over $3500.00 to do it conventionally.

Guys, thanks for all the responses. Looks like I'll go ahead and have it done. After posting this, I talked to a buddy of mine who also used PDR for a door ding and was very pleased with the results. He says that if he didn't already know where the ding had been, he'd be hard pressed to find it now.

Thanks again.
