When shopping around for F-150's I noticed that lots of the 4.6's had a rough idle. When I test drove the one I eventually bought, it ran fine. Now it seems to have and interminent rough idle (I thought I found one that didn't). Not always, just sometimes. I plan on having dealer-installed cruise put on and get the dearlership to check it out. I've heard that a PCM reflash can cure this, depending if the previous owner did or didn't have it done. It only has 39,000 miles on it(05 f150 stx 4x4) . I was wondering if anyone has had this done out of warranty and how much it was (if it's the problem)? Thanks for any info!!!!

to me, the 4.6 is just a rough idling motor. my GT was the same way and I've heard multiple complaints for alot of guys on several F-150 forums.
most people seem to get charged $100 for a reflash...but since they're already going to be in there for the cruise control...you should be able to get a pretty good discount

I've got the 4.2 v6 and it has a rough idle as well. Has ever since I bought it brand new. What is in the reflash that fixes the idle? What causes the rough idling?
I had my 04 4.6L reflashed and it stopped for about 3K and started again. I just live with it. I think it has something to do with the stroke size. The 4.6 has a longer stroke then the 5.x. If there is a TSb out and you are still close to warranty the dealer might just take care of that for you. Never hurts to ask.
Thanks guys! I just don't think its quite as smooth as it should be. My dad has a 97 F-250 LD with the 4.6, which made me look for an F-150 with that engine in it. His has never had and problems and runs smooth as glass. To me, the 4.6 is my favorite. I'm sure they've changed many things since then. When I go for the cruise, I will let you guys know how it goes. And Tylus, you have one sweet truck!
Me too. My 2008 4.2 idle is not as smooth as it should be. Had it checked at a reputable dealer, they told me it's within spec and the nature of that engine. My son's new 08, same engine is very smooth, so who's tellin' me what?? His engine also sounds more-tuned" than mine and seems to eat a bit less gas. "Whatever...." lots more trouble in the world than this but it is a fair issue to discuss.
