Found a wallet

So im loading groceries into my truck to day and i find a wallet in the snow.
look through it, $400 bucks no id , no debit/credit cards nothing in it usefull. so i take it to the police and they told me since there is no ID i can keep the money!

my day just got a little brighter! but i do feel bad for the fella who lost it.

There's bound to be a courier somewhere that is royally pissed....

Go figure: Why do you carry that much cash - but SANITISE yourself of all identification?

The other option is a common pickpocket!

Dump the ID's, and keep the rest. But interrupted somehow...
Maybe they just dropped it?

Either way beware of that area. Something "NOT RIGHT" is going on there

Agreed.

Watch your back, and keep your doors locked.

If someone comes to the door and says that they saw you pick up a wallet, talk to them THROUGH the door.

I'm just sayin'. . . . . .

I would run an ad and say wallet found and make them describe it.
Too close to Christmas to keep it and if it was stolen and maybe thief dropped it after stripping it of ID (talk about Karma)
But I know what its like to lose my wallet and get it back so I would do the ad. That is how mine finally came back.

That's when the miscreant will 'do something' to you/your property.

I advise to not admit keeping anything.

1.) I'd tell the person(s) at the door to speak to the police.
2.) I'd tell the person(s) to have a nice life.

I would rather not have to tell them to pack sand.

You did right by talking to the police. Wanna say that right up front. But like HB said, I'd make an effort to find the rightful owner of the wallet (I've lost mine, too... talk about sucks!), and if they come forward and can describe the contents with accuracy (such as the amount of money, what denominations it was in, business cards, pictures, etc.), they should get it all back, including the money. I know, I'd be tempted to keep it, too, but to me, if the owner can be found, they should get their money back. Only if you can't find them would I say it's okay to keep the money.

Just my opinion.

I'd do nothing but watch for an ad in the papers.

-and probably STILL do nothing.

There is every reason to expect that bad news is connected to it no matter what you do.

The wallet itself needs to go in the trash, the money has no home. Whoever got ripped off got ripped off, and it's too late to fix it. The thief lost the wallet - which to my mind is funny as hell!

If the police contact you now because a report was made of exactly that much cash being taken - well and good! hand it over.

Otherwise just bank it...
What I'm picturing here is either a drug deal, a thief, a payoff, or a numbers runner got knocked over or just plain lost their carry.

Get involved in it and those people will get INVOLVED IN YOU! (You don't want that)

IE: There is DUMB, and DUMBER

DON'T GET ANY ON YOU

If the police ask you for it - give it to them, in other words.

Otherwise, do nothing.

It costs money to place a lost ad but in majority of areas nothing to post a found ad.
Im sorry I just cant have faith in the finders keepers losers weepers theory. Not the owners fault.
What goes around comes around. I guess one should think about if it was THEIR wallet. Would they be okay with knowing the finder was keeping it because the ID was not there?
Just my opinion but do unto others....

The problem with that is that you have a plain wallet with no identification.

All you can succeed in doing is alerting a thief to your address...

The next move is totally predictable!

YOU become the next target

Think outside of the box, see the flow of consequences

Best thing to do is remain annonymous.

I know - it sucks. But further damage is realistically likely.

DO YOU WANT TO BE NEXT?

What the local paper does when they run "found" ads is to allow the finder to use the newspaper office as a meeting place. If the "loser" can describe the wallet, they can pick it up there.

That's true - and the finder is only identified as a number, normally it's strictly confidential.

This is being made too complicated, Hoosierbaby and Farmforward had the easy solutions to this simple situation.

From: home's where the heart is
been there, done that.....lost my purse, had all my money in it for Christmas shopping, was young, didnt have a bank account.....nearly 1000.00 GONE~~ I was SO upset as for my three children would get NOTHING for Christmas now.....this was years ago, BTW.....BUT.....the finder took it to the police station 10 minutes after I left from filling out a report....they called me and I was so happy.....the finder left their contact info, as the police said if it wasnt claimed in 30 days it was theirs, so I gave the police 100.00 and asked that they be sure the finder got it.....I received a thank you in the form of a card sent to the police department and forwarded on to me.....the gentleman had bought a grave blanket for his wifes burial plot.....it was very heart-warming to know this.....and the card was addressed to "Ms Loser" and was signed " Mr Finder" with a P.S. "I was so worried my lovely Helen would be cold this winter, but you were the answer to my prayers"....he could have kept it all and done so much more with it, but honesty does pay off.....what goes around DEFINITELY comes around.....I so believe in karma~~~ I didnt even mind being called a loser.....LOL

I now carry everything essential in my pants pockets.......if it doesnt fit, it doesnt go with me.....
