I'm 100% in agreement with HB and Farmforward...the right thing to do is go beyond what you have done and make an honest attempt to find the rightful owner. I'm sure the police could help by holding the money...you wouldn't have to give out personal information...perhaps jeopardizing your safety. If the true owner couldn't be found...perhaps you could consider making a donation to a local charity.
My daughter pointed something out about this I had forgot about. They had given their dad a wallet for fathers day years and years ago. he carried his cash and a pic of them and a few misc notes (prob womens phone numbers...jerk) anyway she saidmomma he kept his license in his truck console with reg and ins. He never carried his license because he was too old to get carded and where he bought groceries they knew him so he didnt need to show ID to write a check. So just because no ID in wallet doesnt mean it was stolen or just tossed away. (if you found it in Modesto cali and its has outdated pic of daughters he seemed to forget exist and ho's phone numbers you have my permission to keep money)
One time I found over $1000, in groups and individually, very tightly rolled 20s, 50's, and 100's in a hotel garage. There wasn't a soul around. It had to have been drug money, looked in the paper to see if anything had happened in the area, nothing. Wife thought I should turn it, I was thinking, "what if there was $10,000, $20,000 or more lost that night and someone comes looking for me." So be careful on your exposure.
A third option that BigKen mentioned first, donate it to charity. I would personally pick food bank first and toydrive second with the stipulation being that the money STAY in the community whichever charity you choose, that way the "chain of love" is kept alive.

HAHA! This reminds me of an episode of the honeymooners when ralph finds a suitcase with $50,000 on his bus that turns out to be counterfiet, and the crooks that made it find him and almost shoot him and alice!
But all laughs aside personal safety is first and I sure as hell wouldn't want some t'd off drug dealer trying to find me thats for sure
you can place an ad and ask that the respondent contact the police. That will keep your identity safe, and also maybe do a little bit to discourage drug dealers or people simply trying to claim money that isn't theirs from showing up...
well since the op has responded since the thread started hes:
a. gone to best buy
b. has started to sweat will all of the posts telling him to find the rightful owner
c. actually had someone follow him to his house, and is currently tied up with no access to the pc to get some fte help
d. left for a small vacation
maybe he is sitting back and watching us all.....wondering how many of us would be honest and try to find the owner or how mnay of us would keep the money for ourselves, holiday season coming up right now.....maybe this is a psychological experiment for something.......maybe I will go sit back in my corner and play my games.....LOL......I still think an attempt to find the owner would be noble....I know how grateful I was when it happened to me!!!
