Hey everyone I have a 2000 Ex 5.4L 2WD recently acquired and have noticed a very annoying noise when I drive and wondered if anyone has experienced this. It is sort of a ........rubbing sound...or loud road noise. I do have 20's on the truck and I checked for Tire rubbing and found no sign of it. Thanks for your input...
My 00 has aboout fourty different annoying noises so pinpointing one is next to impossible. Its like a symphony of sorts. Does it get worse when you turn? And it only does it when you actually are in motion?
A more descriptive post of what you have would help.
Things like anything you may have changed recently...have you recently used 4 wheel drive if so equipped? Have you recently changed brakes or torqued your wheels on...maybe too tight?...Have you recently engaged your E-brake and maybe it is still dragging and didn't fully disengage...
Describe the circumstances surrounding the noise...like asked above...does it do it while going straight, or when turning, or when hitting a bump or a dip in the road, when it is cold out, when first starting your trip and then quiets as you drive, only when braking, etc...
It is very hard to pinpiont noises in person...and if trying to do it thru the internet...you need to be as descriptive as possible to give folks as much info as possible so they can try and help.
Ok. This is actually kind of hard. I happens the whole time I am accelerating. It starts like it is the engine revving and then just keeps going at the same level no matter how fast I am going. It doesn't have anything to do with turning cause it happens when I am driving straight and turning. It really just sounds like really loud road noise.....from the 20's. Does anyone have large wheels and tires with this problem. ok maybe this ,makes more sense.....Have you ever heard your stereo when there is an improperly grounded wire in your speakers....you get feedback through the speakers and it gets worse with higher speeds. That is what it sounds like. I haven't changed anything since I became the owner of it a couple of months ago. I hope that is a little better and thank you for your responses.
do what I have done record it on cell phone and play it for someone. That helped me a couple times because I am no mechanic. I was helped pretyty much right away. I did that when I was posting several years ago under diff nic and found out what it was that day.
Truck has about 125xxx. I checked the PSI and it is fine all the way around. Have not checked the Diff. fluid nor have I jacked and spun the tires but I will do both now that you brought it to my attention. Thank you. I will do those things then post a status response.
My 02 had the roaring noise at 30,000 miles. Ford had to replace carrier bearings in the rear diff. Now at 97k their shot again and it is the roaring noise kinda like road noise. The easy way to tell if it's the rear diff going out is jack the truck up in the rear securely, and start the engine and put it in gear and listen to the differential, you will most likely hear the same noise. I hope not ,but these trucks are prone to carrier bearings, and pinion shaft bearing failures. If you pull your rear diff VSS sensor thats on the top of the housing on the left side forward and it has a lot of gray or silver metal shavings on it , it's probably bearing material. Be careful when you pull the sensor out. A 10mm socket will fit, but it's actually a 3/8". If the hold down bolt is way tight, and you use a 10mm socket you will probably round the bolt head off and then you'll be in deep.
I had the same vehicle and noise. It sounded like it was coming from the passenger side foot well. Turns out it was the exhaust pipe rubbing at the back but transfering the sound to the front. Hope this helps.
