Ok I have a 2002 ford f-150 5.4 and when i first start it it sounds like an exhaust leak. I have also heard it in many more trucks just like mine. I work in a parts store and there is no flange gasket in the manifold to pipe i checked all of the pipe clamps and there tight im just wandering if anyone else has or have had this problem and by the way i replaced the exhaust thinking that would fix it but it didnt so if anyone out there has any comments or ideas let me know thanks
You have rusted off studs that hold the exhaust manifolds to the cylinder heads. The dealer replacement parts are stainless steel so, make sure to use a set of these to prevent it from happening again. Don't let this go for too long. Exhaust gases that are leaking past a broken stud can etch a groove into a cylinder head which of course would ruin the head. Good luck!
Are you talking about the manifold bolts in the head if there rusted off how am i gonna get em out an ez out ?? id sure like to get this done tho thanks for the info
just did mine on a 2000 f150 7700 exhaust manifold was rusted and cracked try putting some heat to the studs before you try to remove this makes them come out alot easier
snap on has a stud extractor set that work real good for this good luck kingrat427
If I was replacing manifold studs anyway, I would use it as a good excuse to throw on some JBA smog legal shorty headers. It would really suck to go through the work of extracting and replacing studs, only to have a factory cast manifold crack.
I'm new to V8, but in 4 cylinders there are sometimes lifter issues.
In his case, or in our V8, could it be lifters getting clogged/stuck?
Ole_Smokey, Question, does the sound go away after the engine has warmed up or is it always there? I've heard if the sound goes away after warming up it could be the lifters since after a bit the oil has worked through them etc.
