texturing drywall

Any of you all know how to do knockdown drywall texture?
I got to texture a corner of wall in the hall way from the kitchen to the garage and I need it to match the rest.
I've done the spray on orange peel before and I have a texture gun, just never did knockdown.

Knockdown is simply using a wide knife or squeegee to lightly go over whatever texturing you did. The result (should be) is that you end up with a 2-level texture--"plateaus", if you will. The key is to be able to identify what the base texture is and how to duplicate and blend it.

is this also known as Monterey drag? If so it would be as j said you would add your medioum and then drag a wide knife over it keeping same pressure resulting in the matching texture. (I am no pro on drywall finishing but I pretend on here)

2 things, first there is some new lighter weight mud out there, use that instead of the regular stuff. I would suggest finding a board or something to test on and try to duplicate what your wall looks like now. Also, you need to let the mud setup a little before you start knocking it down or it will just run all over the place.

The greatest thing about knockdown is that your finish work doesn't have to be near as good, because the knockdown covers it all up...

Orange peel is harder than knockdown so I'm sure you can do it. Just follow what ^ he said

I forgot to ad that you can use just about anything for knocking it down...If you don't want to buy a wide knife, you could use a piece of stiff cardboard. I have a friend in the drywall business and he uses a piece of plexiglass that he had laying around...

Does it need to be sprayed on first?
I hope not cuz then there will be a lot of mess involved.

Tape off the area with paper that you don't want to hit with the sprayer. Then spray and "knockdown" with the blade/cardboard/plexiglass.

Just like jomac11 said practice first to duplicate finish you want I use a 8" blade and wipe after each pass.We always mixed our mud just a dd water to regular dry wall mud or if you in a hurry go with some of the fast set powdered mixes. But be carefull give yourself enough time.If you can do orange peel you can knock down just spray wait and run a knife over to flatten down

Good catch mackman, I forgot the part about wiping your knife down every time. If you don't do that the texture will be way off.
