HPOP Level

I have a hard start simptom after my truck (2001 f-550 7.3) sits for a couple of weeks.
My truck has an oil leak coming from the top of the engine as evidenced from the amount of oil in the valley. It leaks enough oil overnite onto the ground to cover an area of a hand print. I believe this could be causing my hard start problem.
I have not been able to locate the cap to check the oil level in the HPOP.
Would someone tell me how this is done?

I've read prolly a couple hundred threads on this forum and am very greatful for the many ideas and troubleshooting suggestions peolple have contributed.

Thank you!

Welcome to the FTE forum.. the screw cap for the HPOP is located on the right hand side of the top of the unit.. First remove the large plastic cover just forward of the fuel filter bowl..The oil level should be around 3/4" from the top.. check it after the truck's been off for several hours..

Is that the screw cap that takes an allen wrench?
Thank you for the reply!

Its actually a #30 Torx bit.

The oil leak you describe has frequently been found to be the o-rings on the two hi-press hoses out the rear of the HP reservoir. Those are the most common places to leak. Is there oil in the valley between the cyl banks on top of the engine??

Weird: I took another look at it. Mine is a definitely a hex, but a 3/16" fractional size, not metric, and not Torx. It's the original.

The top of the reservoir is attached by Torx bolts, but the fill plug is hex-shaped, and is in pristine condition, not mis-shapen, so I can get good dimensions, but it fits a 3/16" hex key snug, like it should.

Wish I had a camera that would focus down that close.

H2Guy is correct about the fittings leaking, but in my experience, the o-rings fail as a result of the LocTite failing. I am firmly convinced that it is the LocTite that actually does the sealing of these plugs, and International used it as a "fix" to compensate for o-rings that were not up to the job of containing the pressures involved.

I originally wrote this up at:
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/6...ml#post4657975
and after a couple of years I still have a dry valley.
