OK, here's the problem. I have an 01 Ranger Edge, 4.0, auto 2WD. I bought the truck in May with 88K on the clock. No real troubles until recently.
When running uphill and into a slight headwind, the truck will downshift lazily and the O/D light will start flashing. I know that this is the limp home mode. When I shut off the truck and restart, the light is off and everything is fine again until I get into the same situation.
OK, so is the tranny due for a rebuild/replace? Will a fluid and filter change even help? The upshifts/down****s seem slow, will a shift kit help?
I haven't done it since I have owned it, but it is on the short list of things to get done.
BTW, I installed the Autolite Double Platnum plugs in it and it is like a whole new truck! I bet I picked up 15HP!
That should should have been replaced at least twice in the last 80,000 miles. There is a design flaw that these transmissions have. It has to do with the way the solenoids wear into the transmission body. This causes fluid to leak internally. The solution is to get the tranny rebuilt by someone who can install brass bushings into the housing to address the wear. Most tranny shops don't do this, and the dealer definitely does not. If you get it repaired properly, you should never have a problem again, under the conditions that you change the fluid at the recommended intervals.
I can't say for sure that is what your problem is, but it is really common, and OD is one of the bands that is engaged by said solenoid. So if that solenoid starts to leak, there is not enough pressure to engage OD, and the trans starts slipping. The computer detects the slippage and switches to limp mode to prevent further damage.
There are some known issues with the valve bodies on these trucks. There is an extensive thread on here about it. I fixed one for under $300.00 by replacing the valve body. With a one from these folks Central Valve Bodies - Remanufactured Valve Bodies It has all the upgrades to combat the leakage issue plus new solenoids.

A remanufactured valve body will not correct the leakage around the solenoids that operate the bands directly. These wear into the transmission case itself.
I went to Advance right after the last time this happened. They told be they could only read a code if the check engine light was on. I didn't think that sounded right, but they were busy and I figured they just didn't want to do it.
What would a rebuild cost with the upgrades, roughly?
