Front drum brakes?

I'm getting ready to replace the the ball joints (yes all 4) on my 86 f150 and every single post, manual, diagram etc. starts with "remove the brake caliper".

I have drum brakes on the front of my truck and the ball joints are part of the I-beam. Do I have some freak truck or is this normal?

Also I've read (good ole vague Haynes manual) that if the ball joints are part of the I_beam I need to disconnect the steering linkage and use a pickle fork to remove the ball joint end; yet the previous section in the manual says not to use a pickle fork to separate the ball joint as it would result in damage to the seal and socket.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. If I start this I have no way of going to the parts store unless it's on a bicycle so I want to make sure I have every new part I need before I get started.

So far I haven't seen any references to a 86 f150 having drum brakes up front.

In fact, I can't find any reference to Ford using front drum brakes after 1975 on any model truck.

I'm a complete idiot. I have disc brakes up front. This should be good fodder for the forum...

Any chance we can disregard that statement and focus on this one about the pickle forks instead? That's my real question...

If you removed the tie end rods with a pickle fork and planned on reusing them you would have to get new rubber boots/seals for them as they are destroyed in the process. I just replaced the set on my '95 F-150 (same setup as my '80) and I never damaged anything other than the old seals by removing them with the pickle fork. Just make sure you have a short handled sledge, vice grips (for removing cotter pins), the usual sockets and wrenches, and a grease gun. the new joints should come with new hardware. Oh yeah, and don't buy the cheap joints as they wear out real fast or so I've been told.
